How did the Nazi party convince the German people to hate and eventually to exterminate 6 million Jews? (28 March 2017, 29 Adar, 5777)
Hitler was elevated to power on the understanding that he would solve the Jewish problem.
This understanding was that of President Hindenberg, the Nationalist Party, Nazi Party members, the industrialists, the school teachers, the doctors, and the Army. Foreign backers such as Henry Ford were also important.
All these supported the Nazis.
The Nazi Party was the interface between Hitler and the German people.
The German people empowered the Nazis to do what was done but not necessarily at the conscious level.
They wanted the Jews to be taken away and would mostly prefer not to know how.
This is apart from those Germans who wished to be involved with the maximum hands on contact as possible.
It was not so much convincing anyone to do anything. It was rather to allow events to take their course as expected.
The only ones who were surprised were the Jews.
They are still surprised.
German character is not homogeneous.
The following modes of attitude were to be found in German culture:
(a) Forces Pushing to Kill Jews:
Traditional Kill Jews mode: The Jews killed Christi; they kill children (it was claimed); they desecrate the host; the Jews are not Christians.
General Genocidal attitude: Kill black Herero and Namaqua in German colony of Southwest Africa 1904-1907; kill fellow German congenital impaired; kill racial mixtures; kill Jews.
Scientific Racial Murder: Survival of the fittest, Jews have to die so that Germans may live.
Robbery: Remove Jews from public life so that Germans may take their place; Take Jewish property and give it to Germans. Call the Germans "Aryans" as if they represent something higher beyond themselves, something that Jews cannot have.
Autocratic Rulership: Roman type authority of the father, of the master, Junker, officer, etc. The Jews were somehow felt to be an impediment to this.
Marx: The Jews promote communism and all kinds of similar pernicious ideas. This is a threat to Germany.
Sex: Jews copulate with German women who are hypnotized by them. Once a single sexual contact has been made the racial integrity of the German mother has been irrevocably impaired for all time.
[This was considered the scientific "truth", Even Darwin believed in this, not necessarily concerning Jews, but miscegenation in general.]
Foreign Input: White Russian former supporters of the Czar; Austrians, anti-Semites of all races (e.g. Henry Ford) who looked to Germany to show the way.
Exhilaration of the struggle and kill for its own sake. Any victim would do and the Jews were available.
(b) Forces of Restraint.
Liberal Western Cultural Values: Humanitarian and democratic, pragmatic and learned.
Sympathy for Jewish neighbors and associates.
Expectations for civilized behavior from the more enlightened neighboring peoples such as the French, Swiss, Anglo-Saxons, Dutch, Scandinavians.
Post World War-2
Observers of German character point out the great self-discipline of the Germans; the group consensus as to what is correct; and public enforcement of communally responsible behavior.
The rest of the world is afraid of Germany and still has not recovered from what Germany did to it.
General Hastings Lionel Ismay, (British former Secretary-General of Nato) described Nato as intended "to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down."
Germany needs the rest of the world. Germany needs to act in a certain way to reassure the rest of the world. When such a need exists the German does not play a false role. He rather adopts an existing mode of attitude from the several existing in German culture and plays it out seriously. It was repeorted that for Germany to ahve returned stolen Jewish property in Germany to German Jews from whom it have been stolen may ahve resulted in Civil War. The alternative was to pay compensation which was done. If contrition exists it has limitations.
Today Germany sells state of the art submarines to Israel.
Germany is considered an ally of Israel in many respects.
Germany supports Jewish culture in Germany and in some ways seems to encourage Jews to settle there.
The German public has an anti-War attitude and on the whole rejects its Nazi past.
On the other hand:
There is an ongoing campaign to forbid circumcision and Kosher meat. At the local level these campaigns have scored some successes.
More than 40% of Germans have negative conceptions of Jews.
A similar number believes the Jews in Israel are acting towards the Palestinians in the same way as the Nazis acted towards the Jews.
This is not true, neither does the Media (despite being antagonistic) so depict it. The German public prefers to view matters that way. It needs to feel the Jews are bad. They project their own guilt on the Jews in order to somehow exonerate themselves.
Germany and German organizations fund anti-Israel NGOs and anti-Israel activities and support Palestinian terrorism. Germany also supports left-wing Israeli NGOs that work to undermine Israel.
The 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict, also known as Operation Protective Edge, sparked pro-Palestinian rallies across Germany in which calls of "Jews to the gas" were repeatedly heard.
Non-Islamic anti-Semitism in Europe
Benjamin Weinthal - Fall 2014
... the play Garbage, the City, and Death, written in 1975 by the film director and writer Rainer Werner Fassbinder:
'And it's the Jew's fault, because he makes us feel guilty because he exists. If he'd stayed where he came from, or if they'd gassed him, I would sleep better.'
Henryk M. Broder, a German Jewish author and columnist, is arguably the leading expert on contemporary anti-Semitism in the country. He testified at a Bundestag hearing in 2008, and provided a window into the soul of 21st-century German anti-Semitism:
The modern anti-Semite looks entirely different. He does not have a shaved head. He has good manners and often an academic title as well. He mourns for the Jews who died in the Holocaust. But at the same time, he wonders why the survivors and their descendants have learned nothing from history and today treat another people as badly as they were once treated themselves. The modern anti-Semite does not believe in The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. But instead he fantasizes about an 'Israel lobby' that is supposed to control American foreign policy like a tail that wags the dog.
Studies over the last decade of German views toward the Jewish State reveal that nearly half (at times more than 50%) consider Israel's treatment of the Palestinians to be the equivalent of the Nazi extermination of European Jewry.
In Germany, perception changed in a positive direction. In spring 1991,
less than two years after the Berlin Wall came down, 53 percent of Germans had favorable views of Jews. In spring 2016, that had jumped to 88 percent.
