The so-called defeat became more of a strategic withdrawal after the evacuation of Dunkirk. Churchill in his speeches rallied the nation and gave expression to British defiance of the Nazi menace. The morale of the English and their urge to battle was enhanced through his words and mode of expression. Churchill expended energy and thought in befriending President Roosevelt. This resulted in the Lend-Lease arrangements, and the American challenging attitude towards Germany and Japan. Consequently the USA entered the war on the side of Britain. Churchill was not only a leader. He was also an organizer and persuader. In committee after committee, memo after memo, he got people to apply themselves, got them moving, commanded, cajoled, begged, threatened, whatever it took. Churchill helped put it all altogether. Churchill would cry in public. Churchill cared and it was felt. I could go on and there is more to say. That however is the gist of it. Churchill was the man and a leader of men.
