I knew a Jewish family in Australia named Schmidt. They had come from Eastern Europe. Schmidt is the name of an occupation. It means "blacksmith" and/or "metalworker".
It could therefore be either Jewish or non-Jewish. The Jews in Eastern Europe spoke Yiddish which is a German dialect. They therefore often had German names. If you suspect that you have Jewish forebears you will need more information.
