Seems Dienekes has his doubts about linking the mutation rate of ydna
to an evolutionary timescale

How Y-STR variance accumulates: a comment on Zhivotovsky, Underhill and Feldman (2006)

Brit-Am Comment:
Dienekes uses technical terminology and computations working backwards from known historical events. He claims that the ages given up until now for the appearance of new types of Y(Male)DNAÂ should be much shorter.
The implications are given by the message from

So Dienekes, correct me if I'm wrong, you're saying that the TMRCA of a given haplogroup may be overestimated by a factor of at least 3?
So this would mean that the TMRCA for R-M222 may not be on the order of 1,500 years ago, but 500 years ago?
Or R1b may not be 10,000 years ago, but 3,000 years ago?
=============================
(c) R1b and R-M222
R1b is the most common YDNA haplogroup for West Europeans especially those associated with Celtic and Germanic cultures.
If this began 3000 years ago it means that around the time the Ten Tribes were exiled (in ca. 700 BCE) some type of change took place that caused a change in the DNA.
R-M222Â (also written as "R1b-M222") is a sub-group of R1b associated with descendants of Nial in Ireland and Scotland.Â

What applies to these groups is also relevant to other DNA types.
