Extracts:
As a military unit, they likely learned this from the Carians (formerly providing Marines and Crew for Minos's navy, but were later driven out from the Cyclades [ilsands north of Crete] and resettled on Caria [northwest Turkey] which is where they get their name from), which introduced battle dances (formations), shield innovations and horse hair helmet plumes, they were considered by the Greeks the most disciplined fighters and were critically full-time professional soldiers, but became mercenaries for hire,
It is this organised approach that allowed them to make short work of an enemies lines (that were often conscripts). This seal likely shows a civil war between the Crete (left) and Carian (marines, right). Note the attrition rate (2 Cretan foot soldiers to one Carian), it takes a bull-leaping athElite to break the Carian formation!
It is likely that Mycenae was once a Minoan colony, that with the demise of both civilisations the Mycenaeans would become Spartans and will have adopted some of their conventions, notice on this Minoan silver cup there are two leaders, e.g. two royal houses in charge of military affairs! Many of these conventions appear to have been adopted, including a lot of organisation. I think it likely that both focused limited manpower but with a devistating effect and were disciplined full-time professional soldiers!

Extracts:
The most important evidence that the Philistines were of Aegean origin comes from archaeology. The earliest examples of Philistine pottery are remarkably similar to Mycenaean Greek pottery of the twelfth century BC. Indeed, the similarities are so striking that they cannot be coincidental. [Gives ilustrations]
Likewise, the earliest Philistine dwellings that have been excavated are also remarkably similar to Mycenaean dwellings. In one of the five earliest excavated Philistine city-states, archaeologists discovered a Mycenaean-style megaron hall, containing a Mycenaean-style hearth and Mycenaean cult objects. Furthermore, the Philistines first appear in the archaeological record shortly after the collapse of Mycenaean civilization in Greece in the late twelfth century BC, which may indicate that the first Philistines were Aegean refugees who fled to Canaan during the Late Bronze Age collapse.

The iconography is common on the islands and the Thalassocracies they gave rise to much later in history: Portugal, Spain, Britain, Dutch, Nordic (Vikings). What they have in common is Tin and Silver extraction, this is well supported by Minoan DNA (descendants) and particularly in Celtic and Viking art. Long distance trade may have been brisk before Bronze Age collapse. We can also see that there are currents and routes which would be beneficial to utilise under oar. These ideas seem to be adopted by those on the Atlantic rim and by the Mediterranean islands. ....
The Carians from Delos [in the Cyclades Islands, north of Crete] and likely adjacent islands supplied soldiers and crew to Minos but were later driven out from the islands and resettled on Caria, this may have tipped the balance of power. The Mycenaeans later gained control of Crete around 1400BCE, the Minoans scattered to three corners by the surviving DNA, the world inherited fragments of what they knew.
