Extracts:
... the denunciation - and the demonisation - of King George III in the Declaration of Independence was based on a seriously misleading exaggeration of his royal prerogatives. Those powers were increasingly being claimed by the politicians, and insofar as George III did re-affirm Britain's right to rule, to tax and to legislate for the American colonies, he believed he was asserting the sovereignty of the British parliament rather than that of the British crown.
But ironically, when the leaders of the American Revolution tried to work out what powers they should give to the newly created American presidency, the only models available were those of contemporary European monarchies, and especially the British. And so the founding fathers gave to the American presidency just those powers they erroneously believed King George III still possessed - to appoint and dismiss his cabinet, to make war and peace, and to veto bills sent up by the legislature. From the outset, then, the American presidency was vested with what might be termed monarchical authority, which meant that it really was a form of elective kingship. So when Henry Clay, the leader of the American Whig Party regretted that, under Andrew Jackson, the presidency was "rapidly tending towards an elective monarchy", he was in error because it had been an elective monarchy from the very beginning.
Indeed, better-informed Americans fully understood this. "We elect a king for four years", Abraham Lincoln's Secretary of State once observed, "and give him absolute power within certain limits, which after all he can interpret for himself". Some commentators went even further, insisting that although America claimed to be a republic, because it had no hereditary sovereign, it was in reality a disguised monarchy - whereas Britain might claim to be a monarchy, because it had a royal head of state, but it was in fact a concealed republic, because the politicians rather than the sovereign were actually in charge. In the words of one late 19th Century American newspaper: "Great Britain is a republic, with a hereditary president, while the United States is a monarchy with an elective king." That may not have been the whole truth of things then, and it is not the whole truth of things now, but it should certainly give both President Obama, and also his Republican critics, some food for thought - to say nothing of the occupants of 10 Downing Street and of Buckingham Palace.

2. Etymology. Dun from the Hebrew Word "Edom" ?
dun
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/dun
Etymology 1
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/dun
From Middle English dun, dunne, from Old English dunn ('dun, dingy brown, bark-colored, brownish black'), from Proto-Germanic *dusnaz ('brown, yellow'), from Proto-Indo-European *dh w- ('to smoke, raise dust'). Cognate with Old Saxon dun ('brown, dark'), Old High German tusin ('ash-gray, dull brown, pale yellow, dark').
Alternative etymology derives the Old English word from Late Brythonic (compare Old Welsh dwnn 'dark (red)'), from Proto-Celtic *dusno (compare Old Irish donn), from Proto-Indo-European *dwos (compare Old Saxon dosan 'chestnut brown'). More at dusk.
dun - A brownish grey colour.
Adjective
dun - Of a brownish grey colour.
Hebrew "Edom" means "red" but in certain contexts could also be applied to brown (as Luther claimed).
The "m" at the end of a word was sometimes repalced by "n" and in later Mishnaic Hebrew nearly always so.
Initial vowels were often dropped thus "Edom" loses its initial "E" and changes its final "m" to "n".
Edom becomes "dun".
Similarly Edom also could have become Odin.

3. Afghans and Edom?
The following e-mail was picked up from the Internet.
Asslam o alaikum.
I am pathan and belong to Wazir tribe. Wazirs and Afridies are brothers and sons of Karlan,a younger son of Qais. Qais word is of Hebrew origin and the name of Qais was changed with the name of Abdu Rashid, at the time of conversion to Islam, by the prophat of Islam Muhammad peace be upon him. What are the scientific research results about our Jewish or Israeli origin I do not know. But from my early childhood I heard from my elders that pathan are Bani Israel, sons of Israel. Physically and facialy pathans look like Bani Israel.
It is narrated that Talut fought many battles against Jalut,an infidel, but never successful. In one battle young Daud(David) peace be upon him accompanied Talut to fight against Jault and this time Jalut was defeated and on returning from the battle successful the Bani Israel girls sung praise song for Daud(David) peace be upon him. Talut handed over the kingdom to Daud peace be upon him and left for unidentified area. At the time of living his native area Talut had two wives. Both the wives were pregnant and after some time they each gave birth sons, one was named Berkhia and the second Armia. Berkhia had a son named Afghana. We descend from Afghana and called Afghans or pathans. This story was commonly narrated by our elders and I still remember it. It is common among pathans and Afghans that they call themselves as the sons of Israel. The people living between the river Indus and the river Amo are called pathan and are totally different to near by people.

Compare the following:
Qais Abdur Rashid
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Qais Abdur Rash d or Qays Abd ar-Rash d (Pashto: ), also called Kasay, Qish, and Kish (Pashto: ), is said to be the legendary founding father of the Pashtun nation. Born in Ghor region of present-day central Afghanistan, Qais is said to have traveled to Mecca and Medina in Arabia during the early days of Islam.[1]
Here we have a claimed descent from Israel together with one from Qais.
Qais is another form of Kos the god of Edom. This name is a variant of the word Esau possibly pronounceable as Quasai and by inversion Qais or Kos.
[Odin amongst the Germans was known as Kos !]
Nowadays the alleged Israelite origin of the Afghans is the one that is emphasized.
In the past theh also claimed descent from Esau and from others.
In Islamic lore Esau was not necessarily as negative as in Jewish and Christian tradition.
[There is more to come on this]
Just to set the record straight,
We DO NOT CONSIDER the Afghans to be descended from either Israel or Edom.
