Amazingly, it also seems that the settlers engaged in international trade, as suggested by the finding of decorative beads made from glass, jet and amber from the Mediterranean Basin and the Middle East.
These findings suggest a materialism and sophistication never before seen in a British Bronze Age settlement. Many of the objects were still relatively pristine which suggests that they had only been used for a very short time before the settlement was engulfed by fire.

Many know of Oscar Schindler who saved 1200 Jews. But most people do not know of Ho Feng-Shan/
He was the Chinese diplomat to Vienna. It was alleged that he helped 10,000 Jews get to Shanghai and into other places. He issued visas 24/7, he was even issuing visas and throwing them out of the train as he was leaving Austria while saying sorry for not doing more. He issued so many visas that he eventually got arthritis in his hand because he was literally signing and writing stuff every minute for months. He barely got any sleep and he risked both his life and his job; the Chinese government did not want to ruin diplomatic relations with Germany and he went against their orders. Luckily though he was commended for it by the world, the government did not fire him for it. In his book, he said he regretted not doing enough to help the Jewish people. [He eventually settled in the USA].

3. British Naval Power in the 1860s
What was the size and might of the armed forces of the British empire at the height of her power relative to her contemporaneous rivals and peers?

When it comes to naval power, the Royal Navy was greatly superior to its rivals. It was during the 1850s that steam power became standard on larger warships; although for the time being they were equipped with sails as well, since early steam engines were unreliable and fuel-inefficient. A few sail-only ships of the line were still in service in 1860, though being phased out.
Eleven countries operated ships of the line in 1860:
Britain: 62 steam, 10 sail (72)
France: 37 steam, 8 sail (45)
Russia: 9 steam, 9 sail (18)
Sweden: 2 steam, 7 sail (9)
Ottomans: 0 steam, 7 sail (7)
Netherlands: 0 steam, 5 sail (5)
USA: 0 steam, 5 sail (5)
Denmark: 1 steam, 3 sail (4)
Spain: 0 steam, 2 sail (2)
Austria: 1 steam, 0 sail (1)
Naples: 1 steam, 0 sail (1)
It will be noted that Britain had as many ships of the line as the next three strongest navies put together. Put another way, 55% of all the steam-powered ships of the line in existence in 1860 were British.
