The oldest glass kilns ever discovered in Israel were unearthed at the foot of Mount Carmel near Haifa - exposing an ancient, global glass-production center which serviced the entire Roman Empire.
These kilns are roughly 1,600 years old (dating to the Late Roman period), and indicate that the Land of Israel was one of the foremost centers for glass production in the ancient world.
According to Yael Gorin-Rosen, head curator of the Israel Antiquities Authority Glass Department,
"We know from historical sources dating to the Roman period that the Valley of Akko was renowned for the excellent quality sand located there, which was highly suitable for the manufacture of glass," she added. "Chemical analyses conducted on glass vessels from this period which were discovered until now at sites in Europe and in shipwrecks in the Mediterranean basin have shown that the source of the glass is from our region.
"Now, for the first time, the kilns have been found where the raw material was manufactured that was used to produce this glassware."
Professor Ian Freestone of the University College London, who specializes in identifying the chemical composition of glass, described the find as "a sensational discovery."
"It is of great significance for understanding the entire system of the glass trade in antiquity," Freestone said. "This is evidence that Israel constituted a production center on an international scale; hence its glassware was widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean and Europe."Â
Brit-Am Note:
As we showed in "The Tribes" the region of Haifa was also part of the territory of Zebulon and the Sages said that this area and Zebulon were famous for glass production.
The article discusses archaeological findings from the Roman Era proving that the region was an international center for the manufacture of glass.
This would have been a continuation of the situation that prevailed when Zebulon and the Tribes were in the area.
The implications are that whenever we find this type of glass in Europe we may provenance it as from Ancient Israel. This does not prove anything in itself but may be worth noting.

Croatia's Jewish community on Monday announced its plan to boycott the state's official Holocaust commemoration, in response to their government's failure to control public neo-Nazi expressions.
The Jewish community's coordinating committee said it plans to commemorate the Holocaust on April 15 at the Nazi death camp of Jasenovac, one week ahead of the official ceremony. About 30,000 Jews were murdered at Jasenovac during WW II.
Croatia's far-right is associated with the historical Ustashe movement, which has connections to neo-Nazism and neo-fascism. During World War II, Ustashe was supported by the German Nazis and the Italian Fascists, in the pro-Nazi Independent State of Croatia (NDH). Pro-Ustasha symbols and actions have been restricted by law in Croatia since 2003. The most common venue for expressing Nazi sentiments is public graffiti.
