#2. OvadYah Avrahami: Reconciliation is Easier said than Done!
Dear Yair
There is little that I could disagree with in OvadYah's response to my contribution.
I agree that reconciliation between Jews and Christians cannot be easy. To extend this to all people makes a hard problem exceedingly more difficult
However in my piece I specifically suggested that in the end reconciliation should not be confined to Jews and Christians.
In other words reconciliation is something that is hoped for at some time in the (perhaps distant?) future. It is not assimilation as we agree.
I also believe that reconciliation is possible between sworn enemies in personal terms.
I live in Northern Ireland and grew up as an entrenched Protestant Christian.
But I realised at an early stage that we must learn to live together - in my way of thinking this is reconciliation or the beginning of reconciliation.
After years when I feared to even enter some areas - a fear passed down the generations - I became intimately involved with violent people from both extremes when I was seeking peace and reconciliation.
I found that some (former?) IRA people had much in common with (former?) UVF/UDA people. I consider some of both my friends but in some respects I disagree with both.
Isaiah 49:6 (AV) referring to the tribes of Jacob says, "I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth".
I also recognise that it is hard to be reconciled with people who refuse to speak with oneself and prefers to bomb and kill.
Perhaps I should say that when I first learned of the Holocaust more than 40 years ago and realised that some British Israelites were anti-Jewish, I opposed this and separated from them.
However I am now friendly (reconciled?) with them despite my continuing strong disagreement.
Best wishes and Shalom.

Extracts:
## Rabbi Abahu began,
HOUSES AND RICHES ARE AN INHERITANCE FROM FATHERS, BUT A PRUDENT WIFE IS FROM THE LORD (Proverbs 19:14).
Rabbi Pinchas quoting from Rabbi Abahu said:
"We find in the Torah, Prophets, and Writings [Tanach] that a man's wife only comes from God.
In the Torah it says, THEN LABAN AND BETHUEL ANSWERED AND SAID, 'THE THING COMES FROM THE LORD (Genesis 24:50).
In the Prophets it says, BUT HIS FATHER AND MOTHER DID NOT KNOW THAT IT WAS OF THE LORD (Judges 14:4).
And from the Writings, A PRUDENT WIFE IS FROM THE LORD (Proverbs 19:14).
It happens that the man goes to his future wife or that his future wife comes to him.
The Match of Isaac came to him, HE LIFTED HIS EYES AND LOOKED, AND THERE, THE CAMELS WERE COMING (Genesis 24:62).
Jacob went to his match, NOW JACOB WENT OUT (Genesis 28:10).
God's protection had been with him all the time. Now he was returning to the Land of Israel and angles came out to meet him. They were greeting an old friend. We do not appreciate Jacob enough.
He was a simple person who preferred to dwell indoors, in tents.
When he had to he could adopt traits that were diametrically opposed to his natural inclinations. He had incredible physical strength and used it. For the sake of posterity and of heaven he took advantage of his wildman of a brother in a moment of weakness and bought the birthright from him. He obeyed his mother to deceive his father and on the superficial level cheat his brother of the blessing of their father. This was justified under the extremely exceptional circumstances.
Nevertheless it could raise ???
Members of an Ethical Committee could raise their eyebrows.
Jacob was a man of fantastic superhuman physical strength. He was capable for great lengths of time of dwelling outside in all weather, of taking risks, of overseeing his flocks, guarding against wild animals and wild condition, husbanding his charges. For the woman he loved he gave himself over to a long servitude. He combined an appreciation of natural science with Divine Inspiration to cheat his father-in-law who had been trying to cheat him.
At the same time he is spiritual. He is familiar with angels. They are his friends, and companions. He lives in a demi-world where a wild primeval reality of naked forces merges with the supernatural. Later (again for the sake of posterity) he physically struggles with an angel and subdues him. The Bible relates all these matters in a matter of fact almost incidental manner. Jacob was the forefather of the Israelite people.
We have all inherited traits of Jacob and should strive to emulate them and endeavor that our motivation be as simple and true as that of Jacob was.Â
