#2. Paul Porter: The Normans, Benjamin, and the Blessings
Dear Mr Davidiy,
May l take this opportunity to thank you for sharing your viewpoint regarding Norman names in the UK and the identity of the tribe of Benjamin. I agree with you in so for as some people within the UK have (on the basis of probability) changed their surnames to a more Norman sounding appellation to reflect their much improved economic status. I was not aware of the recent reporting of this topic in the UK newspapers - l stopped reading them six years ago. I have, however, read online material on topics of interest during this period following links by other research sources. I drew my conclusions from earlier studies that l undertook regarding the origin of the Normans from sources including (Encyclopedia Britannica/ The Times Concise History of the World). As my viewpoint regarding the English system of class distinction was formed over 20 years ago, maybe it is time l reviewed more recent information regarding this. However, when referring to the Heraldic titles that were inherited that can be traced (beyond reasonable doubt) to Norman origin amongst the English 'upper class', l doubt much could have changed regarding these facts.
The English 'upper class ' were still the largest group of people that owned land and property up to the period of the Industrial Revolution' (around 1760-1840)- that is outside of the 'Crown Estate '.This group of people enjoyed the early economic benefits that this period brought through having the finances already in place to invest in the new technologies and enterprises. It is also from this group that key positions in government, the military, in industry were filled. This same group of people went on to increase their landholdings (outside of the UK and Ireland) in the new territories of the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the Caribbean. They also were a significant factor in the administration and trade within India. I do, however, agree with you that it was during the 'Industrial Revolution' that the ranks of the 'upper class' were swelled by the emerging businessmen and entrepreneurs that emerged from the other classes - Industrialists such as John Cadbury (1802-1889). This newer, wealthier section of society sought wealth through ethical methods. Their driving factor is rooted in their Christian belief. They sought to change the plight of the working class and lesser privileged in society through improved working conditions and the building of social housing, hospitals and recreation facilities. Not all would achieve this ideal but the sentiment was a shared goal. The attitude in the UK regarding class existed up to WW1. It was during this time that the young officer class of the military (mostly recruited from the middle -upper class) 'rubbed shoulders' with the working class on a daily basis in the trenches. Also, enlisted men of all sections of society stood side by side in terrible conditions of trench warfare sharing a common goal. This was a social revolution within England at the time. Attitudes in social class distinction did prevail after the end of WW1 but the seeds of change were sown. It was after the end of WW2 that real socio-economic changes took place in the UK for the better as a whole. Maybe your grandfather added the Norman appellation to his name to reflect his new status and thus elicit acceptance and approval by his peers? This was not so unusual a thing to do before attitudes to class finally stated to change.
I have, more recently attempted to research genetic markers of the people of both Denmark and Norway. There is a wealth of material on-line regarding this topic. As DNA research is a very young science in relative terms, some of it's findings should be treated with discretion. As this scientific method improves, along with newer technology and software programmes to extrapolate a more accurate history of the ethnic origin of the people of the world - that is beyond all reasonable doubt {That period of human understanding is probably near at hand} Then, many of the perplexing issues surrounding the convoluted pathways of human migration may finally be answered. For now. l shall rely on the 'tools at hand'.
History records that in the early 10th century CE. the then King of France (Charles the Simple) ceded the small fiefdom in the area of Rouen, in Northern France, to a Norse leader known as Rollo. This land was given to Rollo as an act of appeasement to help France to fight, and therefore discourage, further Viking incursions. Rollo appears to be of Noble Norse birth who was banished from Norway for the crime of murder. Vikings, for some time, had been raiding both coastal regions and inland waterways, of France, Britain, Northern Europe. They had also, at that time, established trade routes to the Mediterranean. It is from this group of people lead by Rollo that we have the Normans. This name is an appellation of 'Northmen' or 'Norsemen' that was frequently used to describe these Vikings at that time. Normandy became an extended territory under the rule of Rollo. It is also worth remembering that at that time, England had been under Viking control via King Cnut (995-1035) who was, for a time King in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The Vikings had also extended territories in Ireland, Scotland, Orkney, Hebrides and the Isle of Man.
The term Viking is a generic term that refers to the late first millennium people of Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Geatland. The Finnish people who are now considered close relatives are from the Finno -Ugric of Uralic languages similar to Estonian. This language group also shares a somewhat distant relationship with the language spoken by the indigenous Sami of Norway.
If l can rewind history back to the 5th century CE. it was at that time that groups of people known as the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians migrated to England (Bede 672-735 CE, "Ecclesiastical History of the English People"). However, it is reasonable to suggest that not everyone belonging to this group left their homeland within the Jutland Peninsula of Europe. The people living in the Netherlands today have a strong genetic link to the Frisians. This same group also have a strong genetic link to the Belgae people of Northern Europe pre- 5th century. This is not unusual in so much as they occupy shared territories (at different times). An interesting point is that the modern Norwegians in the south share this same genetic link (Belgae). Much more genetic research needs to be conducted but it is maybe reasonable to assert that the people of Denmark, Norway and Sweden are the offspring of the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and (to a lesser extent the Frisians). I am, however, aware that a recent genetic study of the population of Orkney may not sit well with this assertion. If this hypothesis can be proven by future research, then the identity of the tribe of Ephraim being that of the Angles would, by genetic extension, include all of the Viking people! This would make the Normans of the tribe of Ephraim as opposed to the tribe of Benjamin?
In conclusion, l have made a leap of faith in making my assertion. I would agree that further research is needed. This should come from, where possible, both archaeology and genetic science of the future. Also, l have barely touched on the period of history encompassing the Vikings and Normans. This topic merits more attention as this link is a key component of the migratory pathways going back to the Black Sea region and the Levant.
Yours sincerely,
Paul David Porter.

4. New Month of Nissan, 5776, Month of Yehudah
Saturday 9 April 2016, is the 1st of Nissan, 5776
This is the month of Yehudah according to mainstream opinion (HaGra and Arizal). One opinion (Rabad) attributes it to Reuben.
On the 15 th of Nissan is the Feast of Pesach (Passover).
Nissan is the beginning of Spring. It is the first month of the year for numbering the months though not the years. It was the first regnal month of the Kings of Israel, i.e. the number of years of a king's reign would be counted from one Nissan to another regardless of which month he first began ruling in. Nissan is considered a time of renewal, of new opportunity.
Exodus 12:
2 This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year to you.
Esther 3:
7 In the first month, which is the month Nisan...

7. Question on a Name meaning "Israel" in Irish Mythology
John Hemingway wrote:
Hello Yair,
It is a little more than a month since Adele and I had the pleasure of meeting Avraham [Feld] and you in Jerusalem. For us, this event has been one of the most delightful memories from our stay in Jerusalem.
That the semester at university is now over, I would like to ask if you could possibly tell me where the sources regarding the names Isra and Izra may be found. You may recall the discussion about the implications of God divorcing the ten tribes upon the continuing of their national designation of Israel. I would like to dig a little further in this fascinating topic.
Best regards,
John

Shalom,
I only vaguely remember the details of what came up in the discussion of the subject you spoke of.
One of our Biblical Proofs concerns the fact that names given to Israelites and to Israel in general recur in some form among Peoples whom we understand to contain among them a significant portion descended from the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel.
http://www.britam.org/Proof/Attributes/roleHebrew.html
There are many examples of this that all need to be considered as forming one whole complementary picture.
In Irish Mythology several of their very earliest ancestors are known as as "Sru, Isru, Isra, etc. These are all forms of the name Israel. One of my sons is named Yisrael. His brothers and friends sometimes refer to him as "Isra" or "Yisra". The name "Yisrael" is a compound of the expression "Yisra-El" i.e. "Struggle[or something similar] with God." We also often find in other areas where the Israelite names are repeated by the theophonic elements {e.g. "el") are omitted.
In addition the Prophet Hosea applies the name "Yizra-el" (transliterated in English translations as 'Jezreal' ) to a portion of the Ten Tribes (Hosea 1:4, 2:22). This name is similar in sound to that of "Yisrael" and in foreign parts the two names could have been confused or conflated.
cf.
The Nemedians were said to be descendants of Sru, Sera, and Isru [D'ARBOIS DE JUBAINVILLE. "Le Cycle Mythologie Irlandais Et La Mythologie Celtique", Paris 1884,
p.89ff. ] These names and "ISRU" especially are forms of the name ISRAEL.

God bless you
