One of the earliest cases of The Blood Libel against the Jews was in England. Some claim it began there. This however is not the case. The first recorded claim appears to be against the Jews in Persia in Roman Times. After that the Romans applied it to the early Christians. (Parkes). Later it resurfaced in England in 1144 agaisnt the Jews. We say that part of the English are descended from Joseph. A great Rabbi said that the Blood Libel was brought against the Jews in England due to the role of Judah (Genesis 36:26, cf. 42:22) in selling Joseph. In 1840 Catholic monks under French auspices claimed the Jews had murdered one of their fellows and his servant both of whom had disappeared in Damascus, Syria. Local Jews were seized, killed, imprisoned, tortured. Those who survived were eventually released largely due to British and American pressure. A few good men in France also assisted. Due to this case arousal grew amongst the British Gentiles to obtain Palestine in order to give the Jews a homeland. The eventual result of this and other events was the Balfour Declaration in 1917 and initial attempt by the British to help the Jews set up a nation. The fact that the British later reneged in part on this undertaking is another story.

#8. The Case of Uriah.
Uriah was counted amongst the top 30 warriors of King David. His name is last on the last which ends by saying,
2-Samuel 8:39 "URIAH THE HITTITE; THIRTY-SEVEN IN ALL".
The expression translated here as "in all" is from the Hebrew "be-col." Midrash Bamidbar Rabah 26:13 reads this as meaning "over all." Such a reading fits the Hebrew. According to this Uriah is depicted as Commander of the Thirty.
The Bible tells us that while Joab and the army were campaining against Ammon David was in Jerusalem. He was strolling around the roof of his palace when he saw a woman purifying herself i.e. ritual bathing in a mivveh (ritual pool) of water. He inquired concerning her and had the lady brought to him. They copulated. She conceived and informed David of it. David had uriah brought back and tried to persuade him to sleep in his own house. Uriah refused. So David ordered him killed.
2-Samuel 11:14 IN THE MORNING DAVID WROTE A LETTER TO JOAB AND SENT IT WITH URIAH. 15 IN IT HE WROTE, PUT URIAH OUT IN FRONT WHERE THE FIGHTING IS FIERCEST. THEN WITHDRAW FROM HIM SO HE WILL BE STRUCK DOWN AND DIE.
David was later punished by the Almighty as if he had killed Uriah. A closer examination of the sources leaves this an open question.
What Really happened?
David was strolling on the roof of his house when he encountered a very young woman purifying herself in one of the mikvaot on the roof of his own palace, not that of the neighbors. Joab was commander of the armed forces though not one of the Chosen 30 though Uriah was. It may be that the marriage between Uriah and Bath Sheva could have been retroactively annulled under certain conditions but Uriah was amenable to fulfil them. He may ahve suspected something amiss.
Uriah was also a war hero and a "loose cannon". He was a prominent military personage and also an insubordinate danger. At all events he had to be removed. Due to the liason of David with Bath Sheva this could not be cone in a normal fashion. He needed to be slain by subterfuge. In the end his own impertuosity and war lust led Uriah to seek a quick and easy victory. He saw an opening in the gateway, attacked along with others of his force who followed after him. The gate was closed behind them and arrows from above finished them off. That is what the Bible says (2-Samuel 11). The original order of David to have Uriah deserted in the fray was not carried out. The Almighty had David reproved and punished as if it had been (2-Samuel 12). Joab had the ordrer of David to bring about the death of Uriah published. This was in preparation for the revolt that Joab had been intending.
