Addition (August 2026): Thrace in Turkey
Obadiah (ESV) 1:
18 THE HOUSE OF JACOB SHALL BE A FIRE,
AND THE HOUSE OF JOSEPH A FLAME,
AND THE HOUSE OF ESAU STUBBLE;
Midrash:
This is Esau the villain out of whom emerged the Thracians and the House of Edom.
They are destined to fall at the feet of Israel as it says:
THEY SHALL BURN THEM AND CONSUME THEM,
AND THERE SHALL BE NO SURVIVOR FOR THE HOUSE OF ESAU,
FOR THE LORD HAS SPOKEN.
The Midrash says this verse is referring to Esau the villain out of whom (says the Midrash) emerged the Thracians, and the Persians. Other sources identify Edom with Ancient Rome ad with Germany.
The above note is correct. Germany did receive settlers from Thrace. Technically speaking eastern Thrace today is part of Turkey (see Map).
The verse could also refer to Turkey or to both Turkey and Germany. In the past the two polities were united and fought against Britain and the USA.
"Thracians" in this case may be the Germans who received settlers from Thracia. Germany is also included in other sources as part of the House of Edom descendants of Esau.
In Classical Antiquity, lands inhabited by ancient Thracians extended also in the north to modern-day Northern Bulgaria and Romania and to the west into Northern Greece, North Macedonia and Serbia.
German historians have speculated that migrations from Thrace were important amongst the early populations of Germany.
Thrace is commonly referred to as Rumeli, meaning "Land of the Romans", which was the name traditionally used by the Ottomans for the Byzantine Empire and Orthodox Christians (Rum millet).
East Thrace, also known as Turkish Thrace or European Turkey or Turkey in Europe, is the part of Turkey that is geographically in Southeast Europe.It accounts for 3% of Turkey's land area (an area of 23,764 km2) and 12% of the population.
Edirne Province is part of European Turkey. It includes the city of Edirne (Adrianople) which was once quite important.
The name "Edirne" is derived from the Latin "Hadrian" and is in honor of the Emperor Hadrian.
Edirne served as the third capital of the Ottoman Empire from 1363 to 1453
before the capital moved to Constantinople.
The original founding center of the Ottoman principality was the town of Sutt (1302 - 1326), but Bursa (1326-1365) served as the first major, official capital city after it was captured and established as the core administrative seat of the growing empire.
In the Bible "Batsra" (Basira, Basra) was an important Edomite city and is sometimes employed as synonymous with Edom. Bursa was followed by Edirne.

Czar Peter the Great, in some ways the founder of modern Russia, advised his successors, in his will of 1725:

Jews and Mediterranean peoples in general can produce blonds at the rate of ca. 9% to 15% without any foreign input. There are also genuine converts who are blondish. There were blonds in Ancient Egypt and blonds among the Hebrews. King David was described as an �Admoni� i.e. a reddish blondish type. The individual who sent the reply insists the phenomenon among Jews is due to rape. This may be an echo of his own familial history. It is not true as a general ruling. Most Gentile rapists in Europe would have been of darker coloring. I am surprised that the answer was allowed to be processed. It is racist and the product of a pathological attitude. I will not be surprised if my own reply to it is blocked for some reason or other. Also though rape did take place in pogroms etc., its influence in reproduction terms would not have been great (compared to other factors) and the paternal contribution not usually blondish.

The house of Judah, the Jewish People, will finally have reunited with their brothers and sisters of Joseph, the Ten Tribes of Israel. They will become again one nation called Israel. All the enemies of Israel, the hordes of Gog and Magog, including the archenemies Edom and Amalek, will have been soundly defeated. Evil will have been eradicated from the face of the earth. The Messiah, son of David, will be the only King for all Israelites. They will never again be divided into separate kingdoms nor be different nations. Never again will they be uprooted from the Holy Land (Ezekiel 37:22; Amos 9:15). The God of Israel will cleanse them from all their idols and vile images, detestable things and rebellion. Israel will truly repent of all their sins, �And they will be My people and I will be their God� (Ezekiel 37:23).
The Land of Israel will have been already restored to its Biblical borders from the Nile to Euphrates and divided by lot for inheritance amongst the twelve Tribes (Ezekiel 47:13-14). The Third Holy Temple will have been built, the priests will have begun their services and the Glory of God of Israel will have come into the House: �Son of man, I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel forever� (Ezekiel 43:7). The highest Rabbinical Court, the Sanhedrin, will be restored alongside all subsidiaries Rabbinical Courts in the Holy Land. All of God's Laws, as they were in the past, will be reinstated and observed by all Israelites. All the nations of the world with their kings and rulers will listen and obey the Messiah, son of David, as it is written:
�All kings shall bow down before him; all nations shall serve him� (Psalm 72:11).
The wars, aggressiveness, jealousy and enmity of the nations will cease to exist. There will be no criminals, no sin. The physical pain and sickness will have become sad memories of the past. Foods, clothes, and a variety of free services will be in abundance and accessible to everyone. People will live long and have happy lives. The Era of Peace and Justice that was awaited for so long by all nations will arrive, and the World will usher in the Golden Age of Humanity, the blessed Messianic World.
