Syria says major damage, runways unusable after Israel hits airport. The airport is in a region south of Damascus where Iran-backed groups, including Lebanon's Hezbollah, regularly operate.
Before then, in 2021 a bombardment by Israel had targeted weapons shipments and arms depots operated by Iran-backed groups.

Since civil war broke out in Syria in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes against iSyria targeting government troops as well as allied Iran-backed forces and fighters from Lebanon's Shiite militant group Hezbollah. Hezbollah controls Southern Lebanon. It is a fanatical Shiite Muslim group dedicated to the destruction of Israel and under Iranian control. The Hezbollah also helps support the Assad regime in Syria.
The Syrian Civil War began in 2011. It is an ongoing multi-sided conflcit in Syria fought between the Syrian Arab Republic led by Syrian president Bashar al-Assad (supported by domestic and foreign allies) and various domestic and foreign forces that oppose both the Syrian government and each other, in varying combinations.
Assad belongs to the Alawis who comprise ca. 12% of the population. The Alawis until less than 50 years ago were a pagan sect who worshipped the moon but pretended to be Muslims. Recently they became more Muslim than they previously had been but the rest of the Syrians dislike them. The Alawas rule over Syria. Some of the Muslims in the region around Damascus the capital fo Syria also support Assad. In the past many of the people of Damascus were Samaritans. The Samaritans originally came from Babylon and Persia and were settled by the Assyrians in place of the Ten Tribes. They were settled in the area of Samaria which had previously belonged to the Ten Tribes. That is why they were called Samaritans.
In the course of time many of them moved to Damascus and congregated there.
2-Kings (NKJV) 17:
24 Then the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Ava, Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel; and they took possession of Samaria and dwelt in its cities. 25 And it was so, at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they did not fear the LORD; therefore the LORD sent lions among them, which killed some of them. 26 So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, 'The nations whom you have removed and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the rituals of the God of the land; therefore He has sent lions among them, and indeed, they are killing them because they do not know the rituals of the God of the land.
We see from this that Living in the Land of Israel required Keeping the Laws of Judaism.
Nachmanides wrote on this:
Nachmanides, Rabbi Moseh ben Nachman, RAMBAN, (1194-1270) also said ("Sefer HaGeulah," The Book of Redemption, pt.1), also said that the Lost Ten Tribes are in Zaraphath (cf. Rashi on Obadiah 1:20, Abarbanel meaning France, and Britain), and the Far North, and that in the End Times they would return and re-unite with Judah.
At all events when the King of Assyria saw that the Gentile settlers from Babylon and Iran were being attacked by lions he sent Priests from among the Israelite Exiles to teach them. The Samaritans accepted part of the Biblical Teachings but mixed them up with pagan beliefs. This is described at length in 2-Kings ch.17.

Before WW1 Syria was ruled by the Turkish Ottoman Empire. After WW1 France took control of Syria and they used the Alawis as their allies in keeping the locals under control. When the French left, Syria experienced several changes of government until Hafez al-Assad through the Baath Party took control. Assad is an Alawi. Hafiz Assad al-Assad had been Minister of Defence and the Alawis had been prominent in the military. Under the Assad family the Alawis took over Syria. Most Syrians belong to the Sunni Muslim sect. In the 1982 Hama massacre,some 10,000 - 40,000 Muslim Sunni civilians were killed by regular Syrian Army troops under Alawi direction.
Assad has been supported by the Iranians who are Shiites and against the Sunnis. The Hezbollah in Lebanon also support Assad and they too are Shiites and closely coordinated with Iran.
Bashir al-Assad (born 11 September 1965) has been president since 2000. His reign in effect has been a dictatorship.
Syria sought to develop nuclear weapons with help from North Korea, but its plutonium production reactor was destroyed by the Israeli Air Force in 2007.
The Arab Spring protests of 2011 were originally almost spontaneous protests against social conditions. They spread all over the Arab World and reached Syria. This resulted in a Civil War between Assad and several other factions.
On 14 September 2013, the United States and Russia announced an agreement for the elimination of Syria's chemical weapon stockpiles by June 2014.
In 2017 the regime of Assad attacked its own citizens in the Khan Shaykhun chemical attack.
On 7 April, 2017, the United States launched 59 cruise missiles at Shayrat Air Base, which U.S. intelligence claimed was the source of the attack.
Various reports indicate that Syria may be stockpiling both chemical and biological weapons. It also still has a secret nuclear program.
As mentioned, at the moment a Civil War is still in process in Syria.
The US and the UK have had a de facto presence in Kurdistan since the First Gulf War (1991). This was prophesied as a preliminary step in the return of Ephraim to Israel! Kurdistan borders on Syria and part of Kurdistan is within the area of Syria itlsef.

The Civil War in Syria is currently being fought by several factions, including the Syrian Armed Forces and its domestic and international allies, a loose alliance of mostly Sunni opposition rebel groups (such as the Free Syrian Army), Salafi jihadist groups (including al-Nusra Front and Tahrir al-Sham), the mixed Kurdish-Arab Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Syrian refugees have fled to neighboring countries of Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, and Turkey. Many have gone to Europe, specially Sweden. An estimated 450,000 Syrian Christians have fled their homes.
The peak of the war was around 2015; violence in the country has since diminished, but the situation remains a crisis.
By October 2017, an estimated 400,000 people had been killed in the war according to the UN.
Half a million people killed, ca. 6 million refugees outside the country, and another three million waiting on the border to go elsewhere!!
By 2014 about 9.5 million Syrians, half the population, had been displaced since the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War in March 2011; By 2020, the UN estimated that over 5.5 million Syrians were living as refugees in the region, and 6.1 million others were internally displaced.
And the world hardly hears about it.
This proves that the International Media (including that of mainstream USA) and the Europeans are critical of Israel due to an underlying Judeophobic (Jew-hating) motivation!
The Russian military intervention in the Syrian civil war began in September 2015, after an official request by the Syrian government for military aid against rebel groups.
Russian special operations forces and military advisors are deployed to Syria. Prior to the intervention, Russian involvement in the Syrian Civil War had mainly consisted of supplying the Syrian Army with arms and equipment. At the end of December 2017, the Russian government announced its troops would be deployed to Syria permanently.[
Russia wishes to stabilize the area, neutralize fanatical Islamic groups (such as ISIS and its offshoots), and rollback US influence. Russian military interventions, aiir strikes etc, had enabled the Assad regime to survive. Thousands of Syrian rebels and civilians have been killed by Russian air strikes.
Shortly after the Civil War in Syria broke out in 2011, the U.S. initially supplied the rebels of the Free Syrian Army with non-lethal aid (e.g. food rations and pickup trucks), but quickly began providing training, money, and intelligence to selected Syrian rebel commanders.
The USA has taken sanctions against Syria.
The first new sanctions took effect on 17 June, 2022. There will be additional sanctions implemented in August, in three different groups. There are increasing reports that food is becoming difficult to find, the country's economy is under severe pressure, and the whole regime could collapse due to the sanctions.
Most Syrians live in the Euphrates River valley and along the coastal plain, a fertile strip between the coastal mountains and the desert.
Syria has a population of approximately 18,500,000.
The second-largest ethnic group in Syria are the Kurds. They constitute about 9% to 10% of the population, or approximately 1.6 million people (including 40,000 Yazidis). Most Kurds reside in the northeastern corner of Syria.
10% of Syrians are Christians, mainly Greek and Armenian Orthodox.
A small group of Syrians, known as Assyrians, still speak Aramaic.
Russia often condemns Israeli punitive measures against Syria but on the whole, at least up to now, an agreement exist to avoid fiction has been worked out between Russia and Israel. Putin is not intrinsically anti-Jewish.
In February 2016, Professor Fawaz A. Gerges of the London School of Economics opined the Russian military intervention had turned out to be a game-changer in the Syrian Civil War: Mr Putin's decision to intervene in Syria and shore up Mr Assad with new fighter jets, military advisers and advanced weapons stopped the bleeding of the Syrian army and allowed it to shift from defence to offence.
The Russian naval facility in Tartus in Syria is Russia's only naval facility in the Mediterranean region and only remaining military facility outside the former USSR. In March 2012, critics saw the position of the naval facility in Tartus as a chief motivating factor for Russia to speak out in favor of the Assad government maintaining stability in the region.
Prophecy indicates that th Lost Ten Tribes will return via Syria.

12 IN THAT DAY ALSO HE SHALL COME EVEN TO THEE FROM ASSYRIA,
AND FROM THE FORTIFIED CITIES [Ari Matsor], AND FROM THE FORTRESS [Matsor] EVEN TO THE RIVER, AND
FROM SEA TO SEA, AND FROM MOUNTAIN TO MOUNTAIN.
Matsor is another name for Kurdistan.
This means the Ten trbies will return though Kurdistan. From there they will continue to occupy Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan.
Micah 7:
14 FEED THY PEOPLE WITH THY ROD, THE FLOCK OF THINE HERITAGE,
WHICH DWELL SOLITARILY IN THE WOOD, IN THE MIDST OF CARMEL: LET THEM FEED
IN BASHAN AND GILEAD, AS IN THE DAYS OF OLD.
BASHAN AND GILEAD. This means the present-day regions of Syria and Jordan. This ties in with Zechariah 10:10 and the return of the Israelites to the land of Gilead and Lebanon,
ZECHARIAH 10:
6 I WILL STRENGTHEN THE HOUSE OF JUDAH,
AND I WILL SAVE THE HOUSE OF JOSEPH.
I WILL BRING THEM BACK,
BECAUSE I HAVE MERCY ON THEM.
THEY SHALL BE AS THOUGH I HAD NOT CAST THEM ASIDE;
FOR I AM THE LORD THEIR GOD,
AND I WILL HEAR THEM.
God will make Judah strong. He will bring the Lost Ten Tribes back (Ma'Am Loez, see RABBIS QUOTED https://hebrewnations.com/articles/sources/rabbisquoted.html).
the House of Joseph. METSUDAT DAVID: These are the Ten Tribes. They will return to their land and dwell in comfort and security. It will be as if God had never abandoned them.
The Ten Tribes will be re-instated. Their status as Israelites will be given back to them. It will be as if they were never exiled and never Lost awareness of their ancestry!
ZECHARIAH 10:7 THOSE OF EPHRAIM SHALL BE LIKE A MIGHTY MAN,
AND THEIR HEART SHALL REJOICE AS IF WITH WINE.
YES, THEIR CHILDREN SHALL SEE IT AND BE GLAD;
THEIR HEART SHALL REJOICE IN THE LORD.
Ephraim can represent all the Lost Ten Tribes in general, OR it may refer expressly to either the British (especially) or American nations or both together.
ZECHARIAH 10: 8 I WILL WHISTLE FOR THEM AND GATHER THEM,
FOR I WILL REDEEM THEM;
AND THEY SHALL INCREASE AS THEY ONCE INCREASED.
9 I WILL SOW THEM AMONG THE PEOPLES,
AND THEY SHALL REMEMBER ME IN FAR COUNTRIES;
THEY SHALL LIVE, TOGETHER WITH THEIR CHILDREN,
AND THEY SHALL RETURN.
The Ten Tribes will come back.
ZECHARIAH 10: 10 I WILL ALSO BRING THEM BACK FROM THE LAND OF EGYPT,
AND GATHER THEM FROM ASSYRIA.
I WILL BRING THEM INTO THE LAND OF GILEAD AND LEBANON,
UNTIL NO MORE ROOM IS FOUND FOR THEM.
From the above we see that the Ten Tribes will return to the Greater Land of Israel via Kurdistan and fromt here proceed to occupy Lebanon, Bashan (Syria) and Gilead- Jordan.
