VaYechi This weeks portion is named after the expression translated as lived in the first verse. Â s.1 [Genesis 47:28] AND JACOB LIVED IN THE LAND OF EGYPT SEVENTEEN YEARS: SO THE WHOLE AGE OF JACOB WAS AN HUNDRED FORTY AND SEVEN YEARS. Â [Genesis 47:29] AND THE TIME DREW NIGH THAT ISRAEL MUST DIE: AND HE CALLED HIS SON JOSEPH, AND SAID UNTO HIM, IF NOW I HAVE FOUND GRACE IN THY SIGHT, PUT, I PRAY THEE, THY HAND UNDER MY THIGH, AND DEAL KINDLY AND TRULY WITH ME; BURY ME NOT, I PRAY THEE, IN EGYPT:
His seed was destined to inherit the Holy Land and he wished to at least be buried there. <<I PRAY THEE>>: In Hebrew "NA". Yehudah Kiel (Daat Mikra, "Sefer Breaishit") points out that in Hebrew this word can mean both "please" (i.e. "I pray thee") and "now" and that here possibly both meanings are intended. "NA" in Biblical Hebrew can mean "now" in English is listed as derived from the Old English "nu" and before that it probably did come from the Hebrew "na".
[Genesis 47:30] BUT I WILL LIE WITH MY FATHERS, AND THOU SHALT CARRY ME OUT OF EGYPT, AND BURY ME IN THEIR BURYINGPLACE. Apparently Joseph had other sons. These sons were assimilated into either Ephraim or Manasseh. This accounts for the apparent discrepancies between the accounts in Chronicles and those of Genesis 46 and Numbers 26. Chronicles lists the other sons who were counted as clans and families in Ephraim or Manasseh under the headings of either of the two.
[Genesis 48:7] AND AS FOR ME, WHEN I CAME FROM PADAN, RACHEL DIED BY ME IN THE LAND OF CANAAN IN THE WAY, WHEN YET THERE WAS BUT A LITTLE WAY TO COME UNTO EPHRATH: AND I BURIED HER THERE IN THE WAY OF EPHRATH; THE SAME IS BETHLEHEM.Â
There were two places called Beth-Lehem, one to the north of Jerusalem somewhere between Ramallah and Shiloh and one to the south of Jerusalem in the territory of Judah. The place known as Beth-Lehem today is south of Jerusalem.
Â [Genesis 48:8] AND ISRAEL BEHELD JOSEPH'S SONS, AND SAID, WHO ARE THESE?
Adapted from "Ephraim": Â ISAIAH AND THE RETURN OF THE LOST TEN TRIBES Â The Lost Ten Tribes will also return. The Jews of Judah will meet the return of the Lost Ten Tribes with mixed reactions: Â ISAIAH (49:21) DESCRIBES HOW THE JEWISH PEOPLE UPON SEEING MASSES OF LOST ISRAELITES RETURNING TO THE HOLY LAND WILL HAVE A SERIOUS QUESTION: Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â "THEN SHALT THOU SAY IN THY HEART, WHO HATH BEGOTTEN ME THESE, SEEING I HAVE LOST MY CHILDREN, AND AM DESOLATE, A CAPTIVE, AND REMOVING TO AND FRO? AND WHO HATH BROUGHT UP THESE ? BEHOLD, I WAS LEFT ALONE; THESE WHERE HAD THEY BEEN?" (Isaiah 49:21) Â In other words, the Jews will ask where were all those now identified as Israel when the Jews needed help and were alone? Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â On the one hand those few people among the Gentiles as individuals who have helped the Jews have more often than not belonged to the Lost Ten Tribes. Nations that have been the most favorable towards the Jews have been those in which descendants of the Lost Ten Tribes are dominant. On the other hand these nations were powerful and rich ones and they could have done much more to help than they did. There were times even when the Lost Ten Tribes had acted as the adversaries of Judah. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â A reflection on this future conundrum is provided by a passage in the Zohar.Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â "The Zohar" is a collection of writings mainly purporting to transcribe the ethical and mystical teachings of certain Talmudic sages of the 2nd century CE. Some modern scholars now claim it was written in Spain in the 1270s CE when it was first revealed. This claim is mistaken but some re-writing of much older material did take place. Previously "The Zohar" was thought by savants to be the culmination over many decades, even centuries, of a continuous editing process of mystical works. The present general orthodox view is that the Zohar was written close to the events it purports to describe, i.e. around the 100s CE. The Zohar certainly does reflect ancient traditions and insights of a primordial nature.Â Even if it was not written at an early date it contains genuine traditions from ancient times. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Most Orthodox Jews who study "The Zohar" consider it to be inspired. You may take it or leave it but the work does contain insights into Scripture worth considering.Â It contains observations of value for the understanding of Scripture and also concerning the LOST TEN TRIBES. The Zohar (Breishit, VaYechi, 88m, Sulam edition) comments on the expression WHO HATH BEGOTTEN ME THESE " [Hebrew: "Eyleh"] in the verse we are here concerned with (Isaiah 49:21). The Zohar notes an emphasis in the question on the Hebrew word translated as " THESE " i.e. "Eyleh": Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The verse says: "THEN SHALT THOU SAY IN THY HEART, WHO HATH BEGOTTEN ME THESE , SEEING I HAVE LOST MY CHILDREN, AND AM DESOLATE, A CAPTIVE, AND REMOVING TO AND FRO? AND WHO HATH BROUGHT UP THESE ? BEHOLD, I WAS LEFT ALONE; THESE WHERE HAD THEY BEEN?" (Isaiah 49:21) Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The Zohar emphasizes the emphasis on the expression these: "WHO HATH BEGOTTEN ME THESE .....? AND WHO HATH BROUGHT UP THESE ...THESE , WHERE HAD THEY BEEN?" Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The Zohar then refers back to the time when the Patriarch Israel was about to die and his son Joseph had brought his grandsons, Ephraim and Menasseh, to him to receive a final blessing. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â "WHEN ISRAEL SAW JOSEPH'S SONS, HE SAID, WHO ARE THESE ?" (Genesis 48:8). Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â [Said Rabbi Yehudah bar Shalom, "And why did he did he notÂ Â recognize them?" Had he not been familiar with them?... "And now he asks, Who are these?"..."But rather he must have foreseen [through Divine Inspiration] Jeroboam son of Nebat and Ahab son of Omri [both future kings of the northern separated Ten-Tribes of Israel] who would arise from Ephraim and worship idolatry" Midrash Tanchuma, VaYichi,6.] Â Â The Zohar relates: Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â "Rabbi Abba began to explain [the above question of the Patriarch Israel, "Who are these?"] by relating it to [the verse in Isaiah 49;21] "then shalt thouÂ say in thy heart: `Who hath begotten me these?': What does this verse imply? Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â -That the Heavenly Patriarch Israel foresaw the Children of Israel assembling before him in the future: `In that day the LORD shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people which shall be left [FROM ASSYRIA, AND FROM MITSRAYIM, AND FROM PATHROS, AND FROM CUSH, AND] FROM ELAM, AND FROM HAMATH, AND FROM THE ISLES OF THE SEA" (Isaiah 11:11). Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The above place names are those to where the Lost Ten Tribes were taken or went shortly after their Exile. Isaiah continues to speak of the ingathering of the Lost Tribes as well as that of Judah and of reconciliation between the Lost Tribes and Judah: Â [Isaiah 11:12] HE WILL RAISE AN ENSIGN FOR THE NATIONS, AND WILL ASSEMBLE THE OUTCASTS OF ISRAEL, AND GATHER THE DISPERSED OF JUDAH FROM THE FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH.Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â [Isaiah 11:13] THE JEALOUSY OF EPHRAIM SHALL DEPART, AND THOSE WHO HARASS JUDAH SHALL BE CUT OFF; EPHRAIM SHALL NOT BE JEALOUS OF JUDAH, AND JUDAH SHALL NOT HARASS EPHRAIM. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The question concerning these therefore refers to the Lost Ten Tribes (Ephraim) in the End Times. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The Zohar goes on to explain Isaiah 49:21, the question "WHO HATH BEGOTTEN ME THESE ?" Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â "And they shall assemble together and be multitudinous; the Divine Presence [i.e. Heavenly Israel] will wonder and ask, `Where did you all come from?' `And is it not possible that there exists amongst you someone blemished, of foreign seed?' "They will answer, `We are all your sons. There is no foreigner amongst us'. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â "And they will divide off from each other. The foreign non Israelite element will voluntarily separate from them, and they [i.e. the returning Israelites] will be circumcised, and convert, and these converts will return with [and to] Israel, and they shall be one." Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â In other words the Zohar says that the returning Israelites will be renew the Covenant and be re-united with Israel meaning (in terms of the Zohar) with the Jewish people. In Biblical terms Israel can mean all of the 12 tribes together or it can mean the Lost Tribes (Israel) as distinct from Judah or it can stand for the Jews and Judah alone. In religious terms Israel can mean those of Israel who did not lose their identity meaning Judah. In this case members of the Lost Ten Tribes will be rejoined to the spiritual reality of Israel represented by the Jews of Judah.
[Genesis 48:9] AND JOSEPH SAID UNTO HIS FATHER, THEY ARE MY SONS, WHOM GOD HATH GIVEN ME IN THIS PLACE. AND HE SAID, BRING THEM, I PRAY THEE, UNTO ME, AND I WILL BLESS THEM.Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â s.2 [Genesis 48:10] NOW THE EYES OF ISRAEL WERE DIM FOR AGE, SO THAT HE COULD NOT SEE. AND HE BROUGHT THEM NEAR UNTO HIM; AND HE KISSED THEM, AND EMBRACED THEM. Â [Genesis 48:11] AND ISRAEL SAID UNTO JOSEPH, I HAD NOT THOUGHT TO SEE THY FACE: AND, LO, GOD HATH SHEWED ME ALSO THY SEED. Â [Genesis 48:12] AND JOSEPH BROUGHT THEM OUT FROM BETWEEN HIS KNEES, AND HE BOWED HIMSELF WITH HIS FACE TO THE EARTH. Â [Genesis 48:13] AND JOSEPH TOOK THEM BOTH, EPHRAIM IN HIS RIGHT HAND TOWARD ISRAEL'S LEFT HAND, AND MANASSEH IN HIS LEFT HAND TOWARD ISRAEL'S RIGHT HAND, AND BROUGHT THEM NEAR UNTO HIM. Â [Genesis 48:14] AND ISRAEL STRETCHED OUT HIS RIGHT HAND, AND LAID IT UPON EPHRAIM'S HEAD, WHO WAS THE YOUNGER, AND HIS LEFT HAND UPON MANASSEH'S HEAD, GUIDING HIS HANDS WITTINGLY; FOR MANASSEH WAS THE FIRSTBORN.
Ephraim was on Israels left side facing Israel. He was therefore on the right hand side of Manasseh.
[Genesis 48:15] AND HE BLESSED JOSEPH, AND SAID, GOD, BEFORE WHOM MY FATHERS ABRAHAM AND ISAAC DID WALK, THE GOD WHICH FED ME ALL MY LIFE LONG UNTO THIS DAY, Â [Genesis 48:16] THE ANGEL WHICH REDEEMED ME FROM ALL EVIL, BLESS THE LADS; AND LET MY NAME BE NAMED ON THEM, AND THE NAME OF MY FATHERS ABRAHAM AND ISAAC; AND LET THEM GROW INTO A MULTITUDE IN THE MIDST OF THE EARTH.
It says that Jacob blessed Joseph but then it does not say any specific blessing to Joseph only to his children. The Commentary "Tosafoth Brochah" (R. Baruch ben Yechiel Michel HaLevi Epstein, 1860-1942) explains this to show that when the children are blessed so is the parent.
Â s.3 [Genesis 48:17] AND WHEN JOSEPH SAW THAT HIS FATHER LAID HIS RIGHT HAND UPON THE HEAD OF EPHRAIM, IT DISPLEASED HIM: AND HE HELD UP HIS FATHER'S HAND, TO REMOVE IT FROM EPHRAIM'S HEAD UNTO MANASSEH'S HEAD. Â [Genesis 48:18] AND JOSEPH SAID UNTO HIS FATHER, NOT SO, MY FATHER: FOR THIS IS THE FIRSTBORN; PUT THY RIGHT HAND UPON HIS HEAD. Â [Genesis 48:19] AND HIS FATHER REFUSED, AND SAID, I KNOW IT, MY SON, I KNOW IT: HE ALSO SHALL BECOME A PEOPLE, AND HE ALSO SHALL BE GREAT: BUT TRULY HIS YOUNGER BROTHER SHALL BE GREATER THAN HE, AND HIS SEED SHALL BECOME A MULTITUDE OF NATIONS.
HIS YOUNGER BROTHER: Commentators say that Ephraim was the more humble. They emphasize that BOTH brothers received a blessing and that there was no jealousy between the two. This blessing poses a problem for our viewpoints. In every other case (up to now) all our proposals have been seen to conform well with Biblical and general evidence. In this case we had reached the conclusion that the USA is dominated by Menasseh and Britain (with its daughters) by Ephraim. This present verse however says that Ephraim would be far more numerous than Menasseh. The USA is more than Britain and her offshoots or at least just as numerous if from the population of the USA probable non-Israelite elements are detracted. There are groups that claim that the USA is Ephraim and Britain is Menasseh. Also many people in the USA (including numerous Mormons) have a tradition that they are descended from Ephraim. The blessing was that Ephraim was to be far more numerous than Menasseh. This is repeated in Deuteronomy: HIS GLORY IS LIKE THE FIRSTLING OF HIS BULLOCK, AND HIS HORNS ARE LIKE THE HORNS OF UNICORNS: WITH THEM HE SHALL PUSH THE PEOPLE TOGETHER TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH: AND THEY ARE THE TEN THOUSANDS OF EPHRAIM, AND THEY ARE THE THOUSANDS OF MANASSEH":[Deut 33:17]. Â Nevertheless there are Rabbinical Commentators that appear to modify the comparison: The Commentary HaEmek Davar OF THE NATZIV (Rabbi Zvu Naphtali Berlin) points out: <<In spiritual matters Ephraim takes precedence therefore he was recorded first in the Wilderness Encampment (Numbers 2:18) and in the consecration of the altar. In the ways of this world however Menasseh was primary. This is why Menasseh was counted first in the census just before they were entered the Land (Numbers 26:29). Menasseh was the leader of Ephraim in affairs of this world>> (Natziv on Numbers 2:20). Â The Malbim says: <<[Genesis 48:19] AND HIS FATHER REFUSED, AND SAID, I KNOW IT, MY SON, I KNOW IT: He clarified that there is a difference between Ephraim and Menasseh. The greatness of Ephraim will be qualitative whereas that of Menasseh will be one of quantity. It sometimes happens that one man is equal to an entire people due to his elevated level and the intensity of his spirituality.the greatness of Menasseh however would be due to the large numbers of people he would have due to his natural blessings.>> From the above it appears as if the two Commentators thought that Menasseh would be the most numerous and the most powerful whereas the advantage of Ephraim was qualitative. This is even more perplexing since it appears to contradict the simple meaning of the texts and the Commentators quoted never really do this. Â The Radak (Kimchi) remarked: <<When they came out of Egypt Ephraim was more numerous than Menasseh. By the time they were about to enter the Land however Menasseh was more plentiful. The word GREATER [in the verse:Â BUT TRULY HIS YOUNGER BROTHER SHALL BE GREATER THAN HE] therefore expresses greatness and exaltness. Joshua the son of Nun was from Ephraim, Prophecy and the Kingdom of Israel were from Ephraim. The Kingdom of Israel was named after Ephraim. All the people of the Kingdom of [Northern] Israel called themselves after "Ephraim" and were referred to as "Ephraim", as it says Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah (Isaiah 11:13).>> Many of Ephraim in effect settled amongst Menasseh in Biblical times. We have traced Ephraim to Britain and also to many in the south of the USA even though the USA is dominated by Menasseh.
In "Joseph" we quote from a Great Rabbinical Commentary alongside our own understanding that the Hebrew language of the Script and the symbolic positioning of the sons Ephraim and Manasseh in receiving their belessings indicated that Manasseh would become great AFTER Ephraim.
Whatever the Commentators say and what we would like to say (to be consistent in our claims) the simple sense of Scripture says that Ephraim would be more numerous than Menasseh. Â It may be that (as the Radak pointed out) things change from time to time as happened in Biblical times. Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, possibly portions of Europe, a portion of the Jews, and much of South Africa pertain to Ephraim. Many from Ephraim also dwell in the USA though the USA has the characteristics of Menasseh and is predominantly a Nation belonging to Menasseh. It may however be that numerically Ephraim is still more numerous. It was also pointed out that the Commentators consider the advantage of Ephraim to be more qualitative and spiritual whereas Menasseh had the material advantages. This explanation resolves many difficulties and shows how the blessings to Ephraim can also be applied as explanations for the American reality. We believe the USA to be Menasseh since: Â Groups belonging to Menasseh from Britain dominated the early migrants to the USA who determined the national character. The type of government (Responsible Representation) and values of the USA are epitomized by the Hebrew meaning of the name Menasseh. The very name "America" is a derivation of the Hebrew name Machir who was the son of Menasseh. "Machir" in Hebrew connotes the Principle of Capitalism which in effect is an American Concept. The bottom line is: Britain and its former Dominions are dominated by Ephraim; the USA also includes many descendants of Ephraim though the national characteristics are determined by Menasseh.
"HIS SEED SHALL BECOME A MULTITUDE OF NATIONS": In Hebrew "malo hagoim" or literally the fullness of nations. Onkelos translates this as saying that his seed will rule over the nations. Iben Ezra says it means that many peoples will emerge from him. Brit-Am understands the expression to mean that other nations will be dependent upon him for their very existence.

"PORTION" in Hebrew Schechem. A play on words since Schechem was also the name of a city that Jacob and his sons had conquered and that was destined to be apportioned to Menasseh of Joseph
s.4 [Genesis 49:1] AND JACOB CALLED UNTO HIS SONS, AND SAID, GATHER YOURSELVES TOGETHER, THAT I MAY TELL YOU THAT WHICH SHALL BEFALL YOU IN THE LAST DAYS.
IN THE LAST DAYS: This prophecy was pertinent to the Latter Time prior to the Messianic Era. Many believe that we are in the times spoken of. The Commentary "Sfat Emet" (R. Yehudah Arye Leib of Gur, 1847-1895) points out that these final blessings follow on from the blessing to Joseph and that in effect all the tribes receive their blessing through that given to Joseph.
[Genesis 49:2] GATHER YOURSELVES TOGETHER, AND HEAR, YE SONS OF JACOB; AND HEARKEN UNTO ISRAEL YOUR FATHER.Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â [Genesis 49:3] REUBEN, THOU ART MY FIRSTBORN, MY MIGHT, AND THE BEGINNING OF MY STRENGTH, THE EXCELLENCY OF DIGNITY, AND THE EXCELLENCY OF POWER:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â [Genesis 49:4] UNSTABLE AS WATER, THOU SHALT NOT EXCEL; BECAUSE THOU WENTEST UP TO THY FATHERS BED; THEN DEFILEDST THOU IT: HE WENT UP TO MY COUCH.
We identify Reuben with France. The Zohar said this verse referred to a future attempt by Reuben to conquer Jerusalem and fighting in Israel. The Franks (French) led the Crusades that did conquer Jerusalem for awhile. Will the French participate in a future attempted European intervention in Israel? Â Another person claimed that Reuben was also present amongst the Pathans of Afghanistan. In the past we were always AGAINST claims concerning the possibility of Israelites in Afghanistan since the information we had nullified them. We spoke against such claims in our work The Tribes. We considered such claims dangerous and misleading. We still do, to a degree. Some of the evidence produced has been shown to be very doubtful. At present however (though we still do not accept such claims and remain very wary) new evidence produced to us suggests that the subject should be re-examined. There may (or may not) yet remain a small number of Israelites in Afghanistan. We are re-examining the subject but are doubtful of its outcome. The people of Afghanistan on the whole do not meet Brit-Am Criteria or rather Criteria that Brit-Am recognizes since Brit-Am of itself does not and cannot decide anything on this matters. OLD LION: When Judah was a young nation it was formidable. In the centuries of Exile the Jews had to adapt to both appearing and actually being weak. This was necessary for survival. I/3 of Holland is below sea-level, another 1/3 is subject to periodic sea-flooding, i.e. 2/3 of the country is dwelling on the shores of the sea. This is the only country in the world where this holds true. In Ancient Times a people calledÂ Sabulingoi dwelt in the region of Northern Holland. Sabulingoi in Hebrew means People of Zebulon. Northern peoples at that time switched "s" for "z".

It is only the Joshuas who are capable of seeing that which the eye cannot see and that permit us to attain the impossible. The scouts (spies) failed because they were guided by their eye. They were pragmatic. It was because of this fault that we have been exiled amongst the seventy nations. There are seventy nations because they too are under the domination of the eye [i.e. of practical considerations according to apparent reality]. Later a picture representing Egypt was chosen as the symbol of Joseph. The pyramid in the American Great Seal (seen on the dollar bill) immediately recalls Egypt to the mind of whoever sees it.
