Redemption through the Mashiah ben David and Faith.
Rabbi Shalom of Slonim on Mashiah ben Yosef (MBJ): Genesis- Breishit, VaYishlach chs. 32 - 36.
[Rough Translation and Paraphrase]:
A Jew has two foundational aspects:
Holiness ["Kedushah"] represented by Jacob, and Faith ["Emunah"] personified by Israel.
The source of Faith is in the Mind.
The Mashiah ben Yosef (MBJ) will rectify the aspect of Holiness which is the quality of Joseph [who Rabbi Shalom in this case equates with Jacob].
The Mashiach ben David (MBD) will correct the aspect of Faith which is that of Royalty ["Malcut'] and of David [who Rabbi Shalom in this case equates with Israel whereas others make a reverse equation].
In this way Redemption [Geulah] will be effected.
The Evil Impulse in the End Times will express itself mostly through Lust of the Flesh. This is the department of MBJ.
Faith is inherited by the Jew of Judah from birth. It is in his blood. This is not the case with resistance to Lust of the Flesh. That is why in the End Times the Powers of Evil will try to defeat the Hebrew Nation through Lust of the Flesh.
Overcoming Lust of the Flesh is the task of the MBJ.
After the fall of Man in the Garden of Eden, God said to the Serpent:
Genesis (NIV) 3:
15 And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel.
The man will crush the Head of the Serpent meaning overcome the Evil Impulse in matters of Faith but the Serpent will strike back where the Man is vulnerable, in the Flesh represented by the heel. This word "Heel," in Hebrew "akev," is the same word from which the name "Yaakov" is constructed.
Genesis (NIV) 25:
26 After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau's heel [Hebrew: "akev"]; so he was named Jacob (Hebrew: "Ya-akov" from 'akev' - "heel") . Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.
The MBJ may be killed if he is not able to overcome the Lust of the Flesh.
In effect the Future Redemption will come about through the MBD, through the strength of Faith.
The Sages said:
# Our Forefathers were only delivered from subjection in Egypt through Faith and by virtue of Faith they are destined to be redeemed. #
(Midrash Yalkut Shimeoni al HaTorah 240).
Practical Application:
By learning the Bible and studying these matters we will be mentally equipped to face the futue and God willing be guided by the Almighty.
"Nativot Shalom,"
"And he saw Israel dwelling according to his Tribes." He saw the entirety of Israel united with one heart as a single being over which curses have no power.
