1. Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. The Litani River.
Syria has about 26 million inhabitants on a good day although many have recently fled due to the Civil War between Alawites and Sunni Mulsims that recently took place. Syria is "predominantly Sunni Muslim, accounting for approximately 74%–80% of the population, while religious minorities make up the remainder.
Lebanon has a population of more than five million. "Lebanon is a religiously diverse country with an estimated population of 55–70% Muslim (divided roughly equally between Sunni and Shia, with smaller Druze and Alawite populations) and 30–35% Christian (largely Maronite and Greek Orthodox). No official census has been held since 1932 to maintain the delicate sectarian power-sharing system" (AI).
Syria and Lebanon are two Arab-speaking nations to the north of Israel.
The family of Asad until recently ruled over Syria with the help of the Alawite Relgious minority whose main base was in the north bordering on Turkey.
Lebanon uses a confessional system (powershared among religious groups), whereas Syria historically was dominated in recent times at first by the Alawi sect and at present by the Sunni Muslims.
The Sunni Muslims in Lebanon and Syria are one and the same people, and they adjoin one another. So too, there are large Druze enclaves in both Lebanon and Syria.
The area of Lebanon south of the Litani is now dominated by Shiite Moslems. There are few Shiiites in the rest of Lebanon neither are there any in Syria though some see similarities between the
Alawites in the north to the Shiites.
In the past the Shiites in the south were an oppressed minority.
They were elevated to a position of relative importance by Iranian sponsorship, funding, and direction. The Shiites in Lebanon speak Arabic but are virtually the same as the Iranians.
They carried out terror attacks against Israel and acted as agents of the Iranians.
Most Shiites at resent belong to the Hizbollah Muslim Movement. This is directly controlled proxy of Iran. It has as its central tenet the destruction of the Jewish State of Israel.
Its members are dedicated to destroy Israel.
As of November 1, 2023 around 253,000 Israelis had been evacuated from their homes due to Shiite attacks across the border from Lebanon. This virtual evacuation of a good portion of southern Israel entailed many hardships for the evacuees, as well as for the Israeli economy and society in general.
The Litani River in its final stages before entering the Mediterranean Sea runs nearly parallel to, and about 29 km (18 mi) north of, the Israeli-Lebanese border.
Elements within the Israeli Government want Israel to move the Shiities to north of the LItani. This would enable Israeli who have been evacuated from their homes in Northern Israel to return to them.

The name Lebanon means "White", cf. Mount Lebanon.
In Antiquity Lebanon was dominated by Phoenician cities especially Tyre and Sidon.
The population of Tyre was mixed Edomite-Canaanite, and possibly also Israelite.
In the time of Joshua and the Israelite Conquest the Israelite Tribe of Asher was especially predominant. Dan, and other Tribes were also important.
Tyre supplied trees and artisans to help build the Temple of Solomon.
King Hiram of Tyre collaborated closely supplying cedar logs and sending skilled workers.

The Crusaders established Christian enclaves in the 1000s CE.

So too, Israel has a need to safeguard the Druze population to the south of Damascus and an Israeli presence south of the Litani will enhance this.
In addition to the vital security needs Israeli control of the area also enhances control of offfshort natural gas resourcs that Israel i now utilizing and also the Litani River disposes of large quantities of water that at present flow into the Sea but could be put to othe use.
The Hizbollah is a proxy of Iran which is some dstance from Israel. Nevertheless, the ianains are almost suicidially defaint of Israel and want to harm the Jewish State for the sake of it. This is an aspect of Amalek. The Iranians may not be Amalekites but there may well be Amalekite elements amngst them. The Book of Esther relates how Haman the Agggs and descendant of Amalekite attempted to destroy the Jewish People but his wicked designs and nefarious machinations were confounded by Heaven. So too may it now be so..
