A Descendant of David will rule over us!
Ancestors of the Messiah.
David was from the Tribe of Judah.
Perez was a son of Judah.
Ruth (TCT) 4:
18 AND THESE ARE THE GENERATIONS OF PEREZ: PEREZ BEGOT HEZRON.
19 AND HEZRON BEGOT RAM, AND RAM BEGOT AMMINADAB.
20 AND AMMINADAB BEGOT NAHSHON, AND NAHSHON BEGOT SALMAH.
21 AND SALMAH BEGOT BOAZ, AND BOAZ BEGOT OBED.
22 AND OBED BEGOT JESSE, AND JESSE BEGOT DAVID.
David begat Solomon who begat Rehoboam. In the time of Rehoboam the Ten Tribes seceded. They created their own Kingdom of Israel under King Jeroobam son of Nebat from the Tribe of Ephraim.
The Kings oif Judah were:
Rehoboam, Abijam (Abijah), Asa, Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, Ahaziah, Athaliah (Queen), Jehoash (Joash), Amaziah, Uzziah (Azariah), Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah.
During the reigns of the Kings of Judah Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah the Ten Tribes were taken away by the Assyrians.
In the time of King Hezekiah king of Judah the last of the northern Ten Tribes were all exiled.
Hezekiah was the son of Ahaz and the 13th king of Judah or the 12th if Queen Athaliah is not counted..
Not only did the Assyrians take away all of the Ten Tribes they also invaded Judah and took many captives. These may have included many from Simeon. They joined the Ten Tribes in their places of Exile. The Assyrians under Sennacherib then besieged Jerusalem but an angel came down and struck 185,000 of them so they retreated. The son of Hezekiah was Manasseh and his son was Amon. Amon was the father of King Josiah. Josiah son of Amon rebelled against Assyria as did the Scythians and related peoples. In the reign of Josiah small groups of Scythians established settlements in the areas of Judah and Israel. When Josiah died these were abandoned. The Scythians had taken over the Assyrian Empire and made an area near Beth-Shean in northern Israel their capital. The Assyrians however re-asserted themselves. There were wars between the Assyrians and Egyptians on one side and the Scythians, Cimmerians, Babylonians, and Medes on the other. Josiah was killed trying to stop the Egyptians as they marched northwards to help Assyria. Nevertheless, the Coalition eventually destroyed Assyria. They then fought among themselves. The Scythians were defeated and driven northward. The federations of Scythians and Cimmerians had included portions of the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel.
Meanwhile in the south the Babylonians succeeded the Assyrians.
Before then, Josiah (son of Amon son of Hezekiah) had had four sons: Johanan, and Eliakim and Shallum and Mattanyahu
Shallum the 3rd son became king after Josiah and was renamed Jehoahaz.
After him came the 2nd son Eliakim who was renamed Jehoiakim. He was followed by his son Jeconiah who was followed by his uncle Mattanyahu (the 4th son of Josiah) who was renamed Zedekiah. He was the last king of Judah. The Babylonians took all, or most of, the people of Judah captive to Babylon.
In Babylon Shaltial son of King Jeconiah) was considered the rightful successor to the Throne of David. He was the son of King Jeconiah who had been king before Zedekiah.
The Prophet Jeremiah had appeared in the reign of King Josiah and continued to be active during the time of his sons and the Exile of Judah to Babylon. He condemns the House of King Jeconiah (son of Jehoiakim son of Josiah) and says that they will not longer reign over Judah.
Jeremiah (TCT) 22:
24 AS I LIVE, SAYS THE LORD, THOUGH CONIAH (i.e. "Jeconiah") THE SON OF JEHOIAKIM, KING OF JUDAH, BE A SIGNET ON MY RIGHT HAND, FROM THERE I WILL REMOVE YOU.
25 AND I WILL DELIVER YOU INTO THE HAND[S] OF THOSE WHO SEEK YOUR LIFE AND INTO THE HAND[S] OF THOSE YOU FEAR AND INTO THE HAND[S] OF NEBUCHADREZZAR, KING OF BABYLON, AND INTO THE HAND[S] OF THE CHALDEES.
26 AND I WILL CAST YOU AND YOUR MOTHER WHO BORE YOU, TO ANOTHER LAND WHERE YOU WERE NOT BORN, AND THERE YOU SHALL DIE.
27 BUT TO THE LAND TO WHICH THEY LONG TO RETURN THERE, THERE THEY SHALL NOT RETURN.
2 8 IS THIS MAN, CONIAH, A DESPISED, SHATTERED IMAGE, OR A VESSEL IN WHICH THERE IS NO USE? WHY WERE HE AND HIS SEED CAST AWAY, THROWN TO A LAND THEY KNOW NOT?
29 O LAND, LAND, LAND, HEARKEN TO THE WORD OF THE LORD.
30 SO SAID THE LORD: INSCRIBE THIS MAN CHILDLESS, A MAN WHO WILL NOT PROSPER IN HIS DAYS, FOR NO MAN OF HIS SEED SHALL PROSPER, SITTING ON THE THRONE OF DAVID OR RULING ANYMORE IN JUDAH.
The Book of Chronicles lists the Genealogy of the House of David:
Chronicles-1 (TCT) 3;
9 ALL THE SONS OF DAVID, BESIDES THE SONS OF THE CONCUBINES AND TAMAR THEIR SISTER.
10 AND THE SON OF SOLOMON WAS REHOBOAM, ABIJAH HIS SON, ASA HIS SON, JEHOSHAPHAT HIS SON.
11 JORAM HIS SON, AHAZIAH HIS SON, JOASH HIS SON.
12 AMAZIAH HIS SON, AZARIAH HIS SON, JOTHAM HIS SON.
13 AHAZ HIS SON, HEZEKIAH HIS SON, MANASSEH HIS SON.
14 AMON HIS SON, JOSIAH HIS SON.
15 AND THE SONS OF JOSIAH: THE FIRSTBORN JOHANAN, THE SECOND JEHOIAKIM, THE THIRD ZEDEKIAH, THE FOURTH SHALLUM.
16 AND THE SONS OF JEHOIAKIM: JECONIAH HIS SON, ZEDEKIAH HIS SON.
17 AND THE SONS OF JECONIAH: ASSIR, SHEALTIEL HIS SON.
18 AND MALCIRAM, AND PEDAIAH, AND SHENAZZAR, JEKAMIAH, HOSHAMA AND NEDABIAH.
19 AND THE SONS OF PEDAIAH: ZERUBBABEL AND SHIMI, AND THE SON[S] OF ZERUBBABEL: MESHULLAM, AND HANANIAH, AND SHELOMITH THEIR SISTER.
Here Zerubabel is given as the grandson of Shealtiel who was the son of Jeconiah son Jehoiakim son of Josiah. Elsewhere Zerubabel is given as the son of Shealtiel. It is however accepted in Scriptural Genealogies that for some reason or other the grandson may be considered as the son (Metsudat David). Here we see the lineage of Shealtiel given as that of the Royal Line. There is no remembrance of the curse expressed in Jeremiah 22:30 SO SAID THE LORD: INSCRIBE THIS MAN CHILDLESS, A MAN WHO WILL NOT PROSPER IN HIS DAYS, FOR NO MAN OF HIS SEED SHALL PROSPER, SITTING ON THE THRONE OF DAVID OR RULING ANYMORE IN JUDAH.
The Sages explained this alleviation of condemnation to be a result of Exile which exculpates for sin. So too, the Midrash says that Shealtiel repented. Consequently the "curse" was re-read as applying only to his own lifetime and not to that of his descendants.
Maimonides in his Law (Mada. Teshuvah 7:6) also mentions this:
# Also, Jeremiah speaks of Yechaniyahu while he was wicked with the expression (22:30): 'Write down this man as childless, a man who shall never prosper in his days,' and 22:24: 'Would Kaniyahu, the son of Yehoyakim, king of Judah, be the signet ring on My right hand, I would tear him off.' However, after he repented when in exile, Hhaggai 2:23 said concerning Zerubavel, his son:53 ' 'On that day, declares the God of Hosts, I will take you, Zerubavel, the son of Shaltiel, My servant, declares God, and I will place you as a signet ring.'
Cf.
1-Chronicles 30 continues:
20 And Hashubah, and Ohel, and Berechiah, and Hasadiah, Jushab-Hesed-five.
21 And the son[s] of Hananiah: Pelatiah and Isaiah; his son was Rephaiah; his son was Arnan; his son was Obadiah; his son was Shechaniah.
22 And the sons of Shechaniah: Shemaiah, and the sons of Shemaiah: Hattush, and Jigal, and Bariah, and Neariah, and Shafat-six.
23 And the son[s] of Neariah; Eljoenai, and Hezekiah, and Azrikam-three.
24 And the sons of Eljoenai; Hodaviah, and Eliashib, and Pelaiah, and Akkub, and Johanan, and Delaiah, and Anani-seven.
The Pophet Haggai said that Zerubavel had been chosen.
Haggai (TCT) 2:
23 ON THAT DAY, SAYS THE LORD OF HOSTS, I WILL TAKE YOU, O ZERUBBABEL THE SON OF SHEALTIEL, MY SERVANT; SAYS THE LORD, AND I WILL MAKE YOU AS A SIGNET (Hebrew: 'Chotem' i.e. a sealing ring); FOR I HAVE CHOSEN YOU, SAYS THE LORD OF HOSTS.
Metsudat David Rabbi David Altschuler of Prague1687-1769, see Rabbis Quoted:
https://hebrewnations.com/articles/sources/rabbisquoted.html
: I WILL TAKE YOU, O ZERUBBABEL. Meaning to say, 'I will take a person from your seed. He is referring to the Messiah. AND I WILL MAKE YOU AS A SIGNET. Just as a sealing ring does not move from the hand of its owner, so too will my love not be removed from him. FOR I HAVE CHOSEN YOU. I will have chosen from his seed that comes out of you to be the King Messiah.
Zechariah (TCT) 6:
12 AND YOU SHALL SPEAK TO HIM, SAYING, "SO SAID THE LORD OF HOSTS, SAYING: BEHOLD A MAN WHOSE NAME IS THE SHOOT (Hebrew 'Tsemach'), WHO WILL SPRING UP OUT OF HIS PLACE AND BUILD THE TEMPLE OF THE LORD.
Metsudat David: THE SHOOT (Hebrew 'Tsemach'), Zerubabel was so called since from his seed would shoot forth the King Messiah...
So too, the Messiah son of David will enable each one of the descendants of Israel know what Tribe they belong to.
Maimonides, Laws of Kings.
Chapter 12:
3. During the era of the Messianic king, once his kingdom has been established and all of Israel has gathered around him, the entire nation's line of descent will be established on the basis of his words and the prophetic spirit which will rest upon him, as Malachi 3:3 states: "He shall sit as a refiner and purifier."
There will also be a Messiah descended from Joseph, see:

cf.
Maimonides, Laws of Kings, chapter 11.
“…If a king will arise from the House of David who diligently contemplates the Torah and observes its commandments as prescribed by the Written Law and the Oral Law as David, his ancestor, will compel all of Israel to walk in (the way of the Torah) and rectify the breaches in its observance, and fight the wars of God, we may, with assurance, consider him Mashiach.
If he succeeds in the above, builds the Temple in its place, and gathers the dispersed of Israel, he is definitely the Mashiach.
He will then improve the entire world, motivating all the nations to serve God together, as Zephaniah 3:9 states: 'I will transform the peoples to a purer language that they all will call upon the name of God and serve Him with one purpose.'
If he did not succeed to this degree or was killed, he surely is not the redeemer promised by the Torah…”
