Why didn't Hitler just starve the Jews rather than wasting money in their accommodation, food etc?
There are males who wish to seduce women and then forget them. Some females may also want to be so treated.
They do not usually see each other, copulate in the street and then part their ways.
The general public knows what is going on but it does not want to see it or be disturbed by it.
There are rigmaroles of behavior that most abide by.
The German lust to kill Jews was similar in nature.
The Germans were a civilized people.
They had to first dehumanize the Jew, depict the Jews as having done something wrong by being Jewish, remove the Jews from society,
and transport the Jews in such a way that there always remained an illusion that perhaps some hope still existed.
The Jews accepted this. So would most other people under the circumstances.
The killing process involved transportation with very little if anything by way of anything else, no food, no accommodation, hardly any water.
Trains were needed to take them away since it could not be done in the open and the after-effects had to be cleaned away with efficiency.
Two thousand years of civilization must have had some effect. They were not in the jungle, or so the Germans needed to believe.
In the transportation process crammed up tight in cattle cars, beaten, whipped, without water, or food, or amenities, for days on end, the weaker and more vulnerable were already dead on arrival.
This in itself was the beginning of extermination.
Then began the killing in an industrialized chain type process always leaving the option there for those who wished to have hope that there was something to hope for, e.g. that the shower apparatus was just that, and not apertures for poison gassing. And you had specialized labor to shove the Jews in, close them down, wait for their deaths and then drag the bodies out taking the gold out of their mouths on the way and checking for hidden treasures on their bodies.
Some of the Jews before being exterminated were kept for a while in ghettos and in camps, sucked of all they had and worked while dying of hunger, disease, and exhaustion. Those that remained were done away with like the others.
The above description pertains mainly to Jews from Western and Central Europe (France, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Germany, Czech, Slovakia, Poland).
In the east (Lithuania, Belorussia, Ukraine, Russia, etc) Jews at first were indeed usually herded together on the spot, forced to dig gigantic pits, stripped naked, and shot over the pits by SS men, regular Wehrmacht soldiers, and by Lithuanian and Ukrainian auxiliaries. About 1.3 million Jews (men, women, and children) were exterminated in this way and in similar manner along with Roma (Gypsies), and Slavic peoples. Eventually this method was found to be inefficient and wasteful of human resources so gas in the killing camps was substituted. By various means more than 6 million Jews were done away by German fiat.
