Was it possible that people with Jewish heritage covered it up by claiming they were "Polish"? According to family lore, we have some Polish, but no Jewish, ancestry, yet I have uncovered several Jewish ancestral names, but no Polish.

PICTURE: Wikipedia. Shows the great Synagogue of Lodz, Poland, burnt by the Germans in 1939. Nowadays it may be more acceptable for Polish people with Jewish ancestry to be proud of it or at least incorporate it. Under the Communists this was not the case. I remember articles on the subject that periodically appeared in the Jewish media. There were numerous anecdotes. One story concerned two brothers who were high school students. There were complaints about the boys bullying and terrorizing Jewish students. This was on the background of anti-Semitic agitation that had flared up. The headmaster talked to their parents who then decided to reveal the truth to their children: They too were Jews.
