3. JamesR: Ruth the Israelite?
 =============================
(a) Letter 1 and Brit-Am Answer:
JamesR:
The more I study the Tanak, the more it occurs to me Ruth may have been a Moabitess living in the sadeh [ ] or plains of Moab (Deu 34:5-8; Rth 1:1), just east of Jericho, occupied by Reuben/Gad during the epoch of Ruth. Just as David's wives were called Carmelitess and Jezreelitess (1 Sa 27:3) even though they were from the tribe of Judah.  It would be more logical to believe Elimelech and his family traveled to their brother's territory instead of their arch enemy's territory in the "goy" of Moab, which was south of the Arnon River (the border of Israel and the nation of Moab), to escape a famine. It would also alleviate the inconsistency of Deu 23:3, where a Moabite (male or female-Neh 13:1,25) was never (olawm) to enter the congregation of Israel.

Brit-Am Answer:
This is an old theory propagated by racists and by Christians who hate Jews and do not want to recognize what they consider Pharisaical interpretations of the text.
Read the book of Ruth all the way through.
Ruth came from Moab and was a Moabitess.

In this article we reconcile the point about Deu 23:3, -Neh 13:1,25 about Moabites not being accepted.
You obviously did not read the article or do not care what it says.
Apparently you have an agenda of your own.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I think you misunderstand me and my position . I am actually a Christian who loves all people (been married to a lovely dark woman for 30 years) especially the Jews and their customs. Even more so after my DNA results revealed my ancestors were of Ashkenazi descent. I keep the Jewish Shabbat (Friday sunset to Saturday sunset) and the holy days--from Pesach to Sukkot. And did so before discovering my roots. It's no surprise [the Almighty]  knew I was a Jew before I did :). My position stems from my passion for truth -- not racial bias or hate.
Â
 I realize most Jews deem the Oral Law greater than the Tanach, but unfortunately I do not share the same view. Hence the difference in opinion on Ruth's lineage. No Jew or Christian that I have spoken with has been able to definitively prove from the Tanach alone that Ruth was a descendant of Moab. But we can prove, from the Tanach alone, she could not have been (Deu 23:3; Neh 13:1,25).

The evidence of Ruth's lineage is found scattered throughout the Tanach. Â

Â
Yes. But the Tanach says she came from the "sadeh" (plains) not "goy" of Moab. It also states Ahinoam was a Jezreelitess and Abigail as a Carmelitess. Named after two cities in the land of Judah. I do not think it would be too far-fetched to conclude an Israelite woman living in the territory of Reuben/Gad in the plains/fields of  'Moab' to be called a Moabitess.

To be honest, I didn't read the article prior to sending the email. I read it after your polemic reply. All of the objections and some that you have not included in the article, are addressed in my study titled "Ruth-The Untold Story". If you can definitively prove from the Tanach alone the prohibition in Deu 23:3 applied to male Moabites exclusively, please reply with your biblical references and reasoning. My knowledge is far from perfect and am always open to learning.Â
