Shalom Yair
Often 'other' events have a spin-off.
Scotland will hold a referendum on independence from the UK on 18 September
2014. Currently the polls are suggesting a 2 or 3 to 1 vote against
independence but the respective campaigns are now heating up in earnest,
with the usual political chicanery.
On one side there is the apparent ineptitude of Westminster and flavours of
an 'English' mood (the Scots have moaned long enough -- just let them go),
plus the fear of what the break up of the UK would mean internationally.
Although some Tory politicians have been warned by their masters not to be
too desirous of Scottish independence and the sure knowledge that it will
lead to a permanent Conservative UK/English government. Meanwhile Labour
are desperate to push the 'better together' campaign as independence would
spell curtains for them in a rump UK/English parliament. Labour currently
have the lion's share of Scottish Westminster MPs, and without them could
never again form a majority UK government again. Labour (founded by Keir
Hardie) was born in Scotland, and at best they would simply become one of
the two-horse political party system in Scotland, for evermore battling it
out with the Nationalists.
On the other side of the equation Alex Salmond and the Nationalists have a
recent track record of being 'flight of foot', and playing to the gallery.
They are promoting a somewhat 'social democratic' utopian and inclusive
future (kinda 'all things to all people') -- based on oil, wind and water.
'Jam tomorrow' is a well-know political epithet the world over. Of course
I'm being a little facetious, as I think that whatever the outcome it will
end in tears -- either through independence, or the UK backlash of not
voting so.
However what the whole debate has thrown up is a sense of 'Scottishness' and
what that means. Scotland is starting to find it's way back in sports:
football, tennis. The Commonwealth Games take place in Glasgow next year.
2014 is the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn, when the Scots
defeated the English to regain independence -- though not quite in the
manner depicted by the Mel Gibson's 'Braveheart' Holywood epic of fiction.
To many 'indigenous' Scots (as opposed to immigrants over the past 50-100
years, although some of them too have a similar tendency) the search for
roots has become a significant factor. BTW I use the term 'indigenous'
advisedly since Scotland has long been split along highland/lowland and
east/west (river Forth/Clyde) lines -- each with somewhat differing origins
and mixes.
I subscribe to several genealogy forums and there has been a massive
explosion (courtesy of the internet) in family research. Plus there some 10
times the population of Scotland living overseas as Scots descendants.
Scotland has a particularly good registration system dating back to the
1500s. The then reforming Church of Scotland, in the main, helped put in
place a system of parish records for recording births (usually baptisms),
marriages and deaths. Other churches like the Methodists, the Free Church
and Roman Catholic Church had their own records. Later in 1855 the current
statutory system replaced those.
But what this shows is a massive interest in the past. For example to trace
one's ancestors back to say the 16th, 17th or 18th centuries takes the
inquirer straight into the periods of Mary Queen of Scots, Civil War, Union
of the Crowns and Parliaments, Jacobite Rebellions, Highland Clearances and
'Scotland of old'.
Another factor here is that ancient Scottish history (as I was taught as a
boy) isn't taught anymore. Thus younger Scots have no clear idea of their
roots. I learned of the Declaration of Arbroath while reading in school
about the kings of Scotland, Bannockburn and the like. Talk to any teenager
today about the document and they won't have a clue what it is -- or perhaps
think it's a work of fiction. A few years ago at a dinner party I asked
around the table if the visitors knew where the Scots originally came from
and when. The incredible response by some younger members was that we all
came from Ireland in the 19th century! Yes, some did, but the Scots "Irish"
connection goes back thousands of years. Again Columba's arrival in Iona
around 600 AD used to be taught in schools.
So while your findings may surprise you, Yair, they certainly don't surprise
me. Scotland, though a very secular society today, has a long religious
history -- some of it not to be proud of. That means the people, deep down,
have a religious mentality. Thus I don't believe that the basic Scots
mentality of 50-500-1500 years ago is any different today. Peoples and
nations revert to type after a while -- and sometimes after events. The
State of Israel, Germany, Russia, China and some of the Arab nations are
cases in point, to a greater or lesser degree.
While my comments on the 'extra-special interest' among Scots may be rather
more oblique than perhaps you might have expected, nevertheless they are
essentially true.
Regards
John Thornton

2. Weekly Portion. Tracing the Lost Ten Tribes and Edom
"VaYishlach" Genesis chs.32:3 to 36 AND HE SENT
http://britam.org/Genesis/Gen32to36VaYishlach.html
Extracts:
Seir is the country of Edom: Seir connotes goat. We believe that Alexander the great was a descendant of Esau. Alexander is said to be represented by a goat in the Book of Daniel.
He split his people into two: Does this symbolize the eventual splitting of the Israelite people into two parts headed by Judah and Ephraim?
God would be with him when he returned to the holy Land, the Land of God. Is this symbolic of future events? Nevertheless there was danger in the return.
He was afraid of Esau. He knew his nature. Esau was already then quite capable of exterminating Jacob and wiping out men, women, and children.
He had been promised that his seed would be enormously numerous. Note the constant repetition of this promise. This justifies us identifying the Lost Ten Tribes with large groups of people.
"AND FELL ON HIS NECK": Winston Churchill once said that the German is either at your feet or at your throat.
[Genesis 35:20] AND JACOB SET A PILLAR UPON HER GRAVE: THAT IS THE PILLAR OF RACHEL'S GRAVE UNTO THIS DAY.
A PILLAR In Hebrew Matzava just as likely a dolmen i.e. two upright rocks with another laid like a table-top between them. Dolmens form a trail from Israel to the Caucasus, to Spain, Western France, Holland, Britain, Ireland, and Scandinavia. This trail has ethnic implications. Jeremiah 31;20 according to the Hebrew text and rabbinical Commentators (see Ephraim) told the exiled Israelites to set up a trail of dolmens showing their path of migration in order to facilitate their return in the Last Days .
[Genesis 36:43] DUKE MAGDIEL, DUKE IRAM: THESE BE THE DUKES OF EDOM, ACCORDING TO THEIR HABITATIONS IN THE LAND OF THEIR POSSESSION: HE IS ESAU THE FATHER OF THE EDOMITES.
DUKE MAGDIEL was the real founder of Rome according to tradition.
