2. Clifford Riley: Tartan
Re The Scottish Tartan Cloak of Joseph
http://www.britam.org/tartan.html
Dear Yair
I found the recent article concerning tartan interesting but the claim ignores several traditions relating to origin of tartan. According to The Annals of the Four Masters at Eochaidh Eadghadhach was responsible for colour dyes being used on clothes for the first time in Ireland (purple, red and green), however both `The Book of Lecan' and `The Annals of Clonmacnoise' attribute this to Tighearnmhas and that he ordered that coloured clothing be worn according to an individual's social status in which one colour was used for a bondsman, two for a peasant, three for a warrior, four for a Lord, five for a chieftain, six for a learned man and seven for royalty. This it is argued was the birth of tartan. However Clan tartans have no historical basis and were really invented in the early 19th Century by Sir Walter Scott.
However, the matter of tartan brings to light a historical matter which I think may be relevant. Within the Takla Makan desert of China, Chinese archeologists found the remains of Indo-Europeans buried between 2,000 and 3,500 years ago. Since a number of those initially found wore tartan it was at first believed that they were Celts, however further evidence revealed that within that part of the Takla Makan desert was until 2,000 years ago a major meeting centre where people from the known world would gather to trade.
But they didn't just trade such as silk, etc. people from different races, cultures, religions, etc. from the known world would not only "exchanged ideas and beliefs, but THEY intermarried, had children, some stayed in the area or travelled elsewhere". Given that people from all over the known world went to, traded and inter-married here, then this raises many interesting questions and possibilities in relation to those from the tribes of Israel.
Unfortunately, the Chinese Government is very sensitive about the matter because the implication is that the Chinese civilization was kick started by the ideas, concepts, etc brought by the non-Chinese to Takla Makan.
Yours Cliff
