The idea that the ancients up to Columbus believed in a Flat Earth is indeed an uncouth myth promulgated in the 1880s by Evolutionists trying to prove their intellectual superiority over previous eras. The sphericity of the Earth was known to educated men since ancient times, including Chazal: Yerushalmi Avoda Zara 3:1, Avoda Zara 41, Breishis R.63, Bamidbar R.13, Esther R.1, Zohar III:10, Zohar Chadash 1:15. Rava gives the Earth's circumference correctly as 6,000 parsah - 24,000 miles (Pesachim 94). Pythagoras, Parmenides, Eudoxus, Plato, Aristotle, Erastosthenes, Euclid, Archimedes, Strato and Ptolemy all knew the Earth to be a globe. This is not surprising since 'the Greeks obtained their knowledge of astronomy from the works of the Bnei Yissachar' (Rambam, Hilchos Kiddush Hachodesh 17). "It is He who sits above the circle of the Earth, and its dwellers are like grasshoppers!" (Yeshaya 40).
R.Levi ben Gershon's astrolabe - "Jacob's Staff" - was a foundation of modern trigonometry, and was used as a nautical quadrant for 400 years being the predecessor of the sextant. Without the the astronomical ephemeris of R.Avraham Zacuto who was known as 'the Map Jew', and the Catalan Atlas of the 'Masters of Maps and Compasses' - the cartographers Avraham and Yehudah Crescas of Majorca - Columbus, Magellan, Vespucci, Da Gama, Drake and countless other explorers would never have succeeded in their missions or even have returned home, seeing the difficulty in cartography of the numerous different methods of trying to accurately map a sphere on to a flat surface, witness the Mercator, Lambert, Albers, Winkel, Robinson, Mollweide, Azimuthal, Conic, Cordiform, Cylindrical, Orthographic, Orthophanic, Polar and Sinusoidal projections: "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the Earth?" (Iyov 38).

Colonel John Patterson was an Irish soldier and engineer assigned to Kenya by the British Empire at the turn of the twentieth century. ...
Patterson was faced with the task of not only killing the lions, but also surviving the wrath of hundreds of workers, who were convinced that the lions were demons that were inflicting divine punishment for the railroad. At one point, Patterson was attacked by a group of over a hundred workers who had plotted to lynch him. Patterson punched out the first two people to approach him, and talked down the rest!
After many months, Patterson eventually shot both lions.... He published a blood-curdling account of the episode in The Man-Eaters of Tsavo, which became a best-seller, and earned him a close relationship with US President Roosevelt.
... When World War II broke out, Patterson, now an old man, fought to create another Jewish Legion. After great effort, the Jewish Infantry Brigade was approved. Aside from fighting the Germans, members of the Brigade succeeded in smuggling many concentration camp survivors into Palestine. Many other survivors had been cruelly turned away, and Patterson protested this to President Truman, capitalizing on his earlier relationship with Roosevelt. This contributed to Truman's support for a Jewish homeland.
