... one cannot comprehend the events of recent weeks without an adequate understanding of Iran's role in Gaza.
To begin, it should not be overlooked that many of the more than 1,000 missiles fired at Israelis in the past month were manufactured in Iran, transferred by Iran or built in Gaza with Iranian technology.
...These weapons have been a strategic game-changer for Hamas, allowing it to extend its range of attack to Israel's two largest cities: Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The longer-range M-302, which enabled Hamas to hit cities in northern Israel, was reportedly imported from Syria via Iran.
Hamas has long depended on the Iranian-Syrian axis for arms, training and funding. These resources have had serious implications for Gaza since Israel left the territory entirely in 2005, a move that opened a window of opportunity for a peaceful, democratic Palestinian state-in-the-making to emerge. Hamas and Iran quickly moved in and closed that window, with tragic implications for the people of Gaza.
.... The territory is now replete with tunnels, bunkers and underground missile launch pads. In recent days, Hamas even launched its own drones over Israel.
None of this would be possible without extensive funding from Iran. At one point, the government of Egypt revealed that Iran was funnelling upwards of $300 million annually to Hamas.
Additional numbers are equally staggering. Prior to Israel's current operation, terror groups in Gaza possessed an estimated 10,000 missiles. Hamas operatives, many of whom were trained in Iran, now also number at least 10,000. Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which is even closer to Iran than is Hamas, boasts several thousand fighters in Gaza. Analysts have noted that the two factions have been competing to see which one can fire missiles deeper into Israel.
Every missile made in Iran and fired by Hamas threatens Israeli civilians and puts Palestinian lives at risk by requiring Israel to take countermeasures. On that note, the news that Hamas is openly calling the people of Gaza to serve as human shields is particularly nauseating.
Irans mentorship of Hamas in Gaza is modelled on its development of Hezbollah in Lebanon. In both cases, Iran seeks to advance the Islamic Revolution throughout the Middle East and support local groups willing to wage a proxy war with Israel. Unfortunately, those who pay the price for Irans destructive ventures are Israelis and innocent Palestinians alike.
As an Iranian-Canadian who has spent years raising awareness of human rights violations inside Iran, it grieves me that Tehran's brutal agenda is now playing itself out in Israel and Gaza. Were it not for the Iranian regime's extensive role in laying the foundation for the current war, the past few weeks may have been very different for Israelis and Palestinians. Those of us in the West who care about peace in the Middle East should recognize that Tehrans fingerprints are all over the current round of violence.

2. More than 700 killed in Syria as ISIS tightens grip on east

Extracts:
Beirut, Asharq Al-Awsat, More than 700 people were killed in Syria over the course of Thursday and Friday, in what activists say were the bloodiest 48 hours of fighting in the conflict to date.
The final toll was announced after the SOHR reported that 270 people had been killed in fighting between pro-Syrian government forces and militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), when the latter seized the Shaar gas field east of the city of Homs on Friday.
At the end of June, ISIS declared that it had formed an 'Islamic State' on territory it controls in Iraq and Syria, and had appointed its leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi as a new 'caliph,' or spiritual and political leader of the world's Muslims.
While this, and its role at the vanguard of the rebellion against the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki, has gained the most attention in recent weeks, the group has also continued its attempts to win more territory in Syria. In particular, it is continuing to strengthen its hold on provinces in eastern Syrian territories like Deir Ezzor, expelling or killing members of other Syrian rebel groups and battling to take territory controlled by Syrian Kurds.
As well as expanding territory under its control, ISIS is also reported to be cracking down on activities it deems contrary to its radical interpretation of Islamic law, including execution by public stoning.

Boko Haram insurgents kill 100 people as they take control of Nigerian town, Associated Press, July 19, 2014:
Boko Haram extremists have killed more than 100 people and hoisted their black and white flag over a north-eastern town left undefended by Nigeria's military, according to a civil defence spokesman and a human rights advocate.
Hundreds of people in another north-eastern area, Askira Uba, are fleeing after receiving letters from the Boko Haram threatening to attack and take over their villages, Abbas Gava, a spokesman for the Nigerian Vigilante Group said.
'Nine major villages are on the run,' Â he said.
Survivors said on Saturday that the insurgents had attacked the town of Damboa before dawn on Friday, firing rocket-propelled grenades, throwing homemade bombs into homes and gunning down people as they tried to escape the ensuing fires. Most of the town had burned down, they said.
A human rights advocate said Boko Haram had struck again as people were trying to bury their dead, and that the toll was probably much higher than 100. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to reporters.
The only defence came from vigilantes armed with clubs and homemade rifles, Gava said.

4. French Muslims go on rampage in Paris suburb, attacking two synagogues, setting fire to cars, pillaging stores in Jewish suburb

Savages. Europe slaughtered over six million Jews and imported over 25 million Muslims - their eventual executioners. These are not rallies, they are terrorist attacks. And France is not having it. They banned these orgies of violence. You see how that's working out.
What I find most telling is that jihad-aligned media, which has enthusiastically served the Islamic cause, was also the object of Muslim wrath. The savage protesters began to attack the media covering the incident. Several journalists were assaulted, a cameraman was robbed of his equipment, and an AFP photographer was injured.
'An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, Â hoping it will eat him last.' Â But eat you he will.
The Holocaust, while it was a German initiative, was carried out by every nation in Europe, save for the Danes. There were Dutch Nazis, Polish Nazis, French Nazis etc, Â Europe as a continent decided it was a good idea to get rid of the Jews. Researchers at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum have catalogued 42,500 Nazi ghettos and camps over 13 years of analysis. That number includes 'killing centres,' forced labour camps, prisoner-of-war camps, brothels and 'care' centres where pregnant women were forced to have abortions, The New York Times reported. 30,000 slave labour camps; 1,150 Jewish ghettos; 980 concentration camps; 1,000 prisoner-of-war camps; 500 brothels; and thousands of other camps for pregnant women and the elderly.
Over 42,000 concentration camps? That wasn't just the Germans.

5. Muslim Double Standards Abound

As I write, Muslims around the world have taken to the streets and social media to protest Israel's Operation Protective Edge, that has resulted in the deaths of nearly 200 Palestinians.
Undoubtedly the death of 200 Arabs, many of them civilian women and children, is tragic and worthy of condemnation.
However, just next door to Israel almost 200,000 Arabs have been killed by fellow Arabs in Syria, but that tragedy has triggered no public demonstrations of anger in Islamic capitals, let alone in Toronto.
Let us examine two military operations by two countries against what they describe as Islamic terrorists belonging to radical jihadi movements.
While Israel's Operation Protective Edge is making the lead story around the world, few are aware of Pakistan's Operation Zarb-e-Azb (Strike of Prophet Muhammad's Sword) underway against the Taliban inside Pakistan.
Israel's military operations have killed about 200 and displaced about 17,000 Palestinians from their homes in Gaza.
Pakistan's military operations, on the other hand, have killed over 400 and made over 900,000 Pashtun Pakistanis homeless and destitute in their own country.
While the 17,000 Palestinians are finding shelter in United Nations Relief and Works Agency structures, nearly one million Pakistanis are facing a catastrophe that has triggered neither media coverage, nor international aid or protest.
On Monday, a day after an Israeli missile killed 18 family members of the Hamas police chief in Gaza, Iraqi men in Baghdad slaughtered 28 Iraqi women.
There was plenty of fury over the dead family, almost none for the women, for they were alleged to be residents of a brothel, as if that mattered.
Here's why. It is not the race or religion of the victim that counts, but the identity of their tormentor.
