2. Ninth of Av Fast begins Tonight
This year the Ninth of Av Fast begins at sunset 8th July 2014 and ends after sundown on 9th July.
Tisha B'Av
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tisha B'Av (lit. "the ninth of Av"), is an annual fast day in Judaism which commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem and the subsequent exile of the Jews from the Land of Israel. The day also commemorates other tragedies which occurred on the same day, including the Roman massacre of over 100,000 Jews at Betar in 132 CE. Instituted by the rabbis of 2nd-century Palestine, Tisha B'Av is regarded as the saddest day in the Jewish calendar and a day which is destined for tragedy.
Tisha B'Av falls in July or August in the Western calendar.
In addition to the basic five prohibitions, all pleasurable activity is forbidden. The Book of Lamentations which mourns the destruction of Jerusalem is read in the synagogue, followed by the kinnot, a series of liturgical dirges which lament the loss of the Temple and Jerusalem.
According to Rabbinic tradition (as seen in the Mishnah Taanit 4:6), the sin of the Twelve Spies produced the annual fast day of Tisha B'Av. When the Israelites accepted the false report, they wept over the false belief that God was setting them up for defeat. The night that the people cried was the ninth of Av, which became a day of weeping and misfortune for all time.[3]
According to the Mishnah (Taanit 4:6), five specific events occurred on the ninth of Av that warrant fasting:
The twelve spies sent by Moses to observe the land of Canaan returned from their mission. Only two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb, brought a positive report, while the others spoke disparagingly about the land. The majority report caused the Children of Israel to cry, panic and despair of ever entering the "Promised Land". For this, they were punished by God that their generation would not enter the land. Because of the Israelites' lack of faith, God decreed that for all generations this date would become one of crying and misfortune for their descendants. (See Numbers 13; Numbers 14).
The First Temple built by King Solomon and the Kingdom of Judah was destroyed by the Babylonians led by Nebuchadnezzar in 587 BCE... According to the Talmud in tractate Ta'anit, the destruction of the First Temple began on the Ninth of Av and the Temple continued to burn throughout the Tenth of Av.
The Second Temple built by Ezra and Nehemiah was destroyed by the Romans in August 70 CE (AM 3830), scattering the people of Judea and commencing the Jewish exile from the Holy Land.
The Romans crushed Bar Kokhba's revolt and destroyed the city of Betar, killing over 100,000 Jews, on July 8, 132 CE (Av 9, AM 3892).[6]
Following the Bar Kokhba revolt, Roman commander Turnus Rufus plowed the site of the Temple and the surrounding area, in 133 CE.[7]
Other calamities associated with Tisha B'Av:
The episode of the Golden calf (17th of Tammuz) in which the Hebrews, after their exodus from Egypt, reintroduced idolatry as a form of spirituality.[8][9]
The First Crusade officially commenced on August 15, 1096 (Av 24, AM 4856), killing 10,000 Jews in its first month and destroying Jewish communities in France and the Rhineland. A grand total of 1.2 million Jews were killed by this crusade that started on the 9th of Av.[6][10]
The Jews were expelled from England on July 18, 1290 (Av 9, AM 5050).[6]
The Jews were expelled from France on July 22, 1306 (Av 10, AM 5066).
The Jews were expelled from Spain on July 31, 1492 (Av 7, AM 5252).[7]
Germany entered World War I on August 1-2, 1914 (Av 9-10, AM 5674), which caused massive upheaval in European Jewry and whose aftermath led to the Holocaust.[6]
On August 2, 1941 (Av 9, AM 5701), SS commander Heinrich Himmler formally received approval from the Nazi Party for "The Final Solution". As a result, the Holocaust began during which almost one third of world's Jewish population perished.
On July 23, 1942 (Av 9, AM 5702), began the mass deportation of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto, en route to Treblinka.
On the 10th of Av the following events took place:
AMIA bombing of the Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, killing 85 and injuring 300 on 18 July 1994; 10 Av, AM 5754.
Israel's unilateral disengagement plan, also known as the "Disengagement plan", "Gaza expulsion plan", or Hitnatkut, began 10 Av, AM 5765; 15 August 2005.
The scroll of Eicha (Book of Lamentations) is read in synagogue during the evening services.
In many Sephardic congregations the Book of Job is read on the morning of Tisha B'Av.

3. France Calls to 'Impose' Ceasefire as Europeans Slam Israel
by AFP and Arutz Sheva Staff
Extracts:
Israel's right to security does not justify its actions in Gaza, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Monday, as he called for a political solution to be "imposed" by the international community.
"How many more deaths will it take to stop what must be called the carnage in Gaza?" Fabius said in a statement. "The tradition of friendship between Israel and France is an old one and Israel's right to security is total, but this right does not justify the killing of children and the slaughter of civilians."
Fabius said Islamist group Hamas, the de facto rulers of Gaza, "clearly carries an overwhelming responsibility" for the conflict but that Israel was not justified in carrying out what UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called "a criminal act" with the attack near the school.
"That is why we support and demand the establishment of a real ceasefire as proposed by Egypt and why we are ready, as French and Europeans, to contribute to it in a concrete way," he said.
"It is also why a political solution is essential... and should in my opinion be imposed by the international community," Fabius said.
Fabius's statements surface just minutes after Hamas breached Israel's unilateral ceasefire Monday, firing rockets on Israel after two hours of quiet.
European outrage at Israel increases, meanwhile, after Palestinian sources claimed Israel shelled a UN school in Gaza that was likely being used as Hamas headquarters.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said Monday that the United Nations was "right" to condemn the shelling of a UN school in Gaza, but declined to say whether it breached international law.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the attack on a school in Rafah on Sunday was a "moral outrage and a criminal act"; Cameron agreed.
The IDF has previously provided video evidence that Hamas fires rockets from inside schools and it is also known that Hamas has also been using UNRWA schools as storage sites for its rockets. For the third time in recent days, such a stockpile was discovered in a UN school Tuesday.

Will France (i.e. Reuben) Invade Israel?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYa5_AcIyjg
The population of France includes members of the Ten Lost Tribes. A portion of these descend from the Tribe of Reuben. Reuben was the first-born son of Israel.
Nevertheless, there are indications that Reuben in a moment of weakness will try and conquer Jerusalem and the Land of Israel for himself. He will not succeed.
