1. Anti-Semitism spike in Germany raising old fears

FRANKFURT - Armed guards have been posted at synagogues throughout Germany for the start of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Anti-Semitism is once again on the rise in Europe, especially in Germany.
The tensions have been building in Germany since demonstrations against last summer's Gaza war exposed a clear anti-Jewish sentiment. Chants were heard that echoed from Germany's darkest times.
"Jew, Jew! Cowardly pig," they said.
"We haven't had this dimension at all before," said Deiter Graumann, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany. "When you imagine in German streets, people here chanting - a roaring mob chanting - Jews to be gassed, to be slaughtered, to be burned."
He said he doesn't quite believe the sentiments have spiked because of passions that were stirred up by the events in Gaza.
"It is cited as a reason for that but I don't think it's a reason," Graumann said. "It's a pretext. It's an occasion to let it out."
Much more of the incendiary street rhetoric has come from German Muslims, many of whom are recent immigrants.
But Monika Schwartz Friesel, of Berlin's Technical University, has studied thousands of anti-Semitic emails sent to German-Jewish institutions and made a disturbing discovery.
"We saw that more than 60 percent of the writers, who clearly evoke anti-Semitic stereotypes, come from the middle of society and many of them are highly educated," she said.
The memories of Jewish persecution -- of the November 1938 Kristallnacht when Jewish institutions were destroyed -- are burned into German memory. Frankfurt's main synagogue, badly damaged that night, is one of those now under armed guard.
Anti-Israeli protests that become anti-Semitic demonstrations may be taking place across Europe, but nowhere are the echoes more sinister than they are here in Germany. This may not be 1938, but once again the Jewish community here says it feels like it's under siege.
"They are worried," said Graumann. "And many Jews here ask the question 'Has our Jewish population a future in Germany?' I haven't heard that question for many, many years."
Now, though, the question is being asked again.

2. Israel chides Swedish PM over Palestinian state
http://news.yahoo.com/israel-chides-swedish-pm-over-palestinian-state-060755792.html
Jerusalem (AFP) - Israel has hit out at Sweden's newly elected prime minister Stefan Loefven over his decision to recognise a Palestinian state.
"Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that he regrets that the new prime minister was in a hurry to make statements on Sweden's position regarding recognition of a Palestinian state, apparently before he had time even to study the issue in depth," Lieberman's office quoted him as saying, in a statement issued late Saturday.
It added that Sweden's ambassador to Israel, Carl Magnus Nesser, "will be invited for a talk at the foreign ministry in Jerusalem," but did not say when.
"Prime Minister Loefven needs to understand that no statement or act by an external party can be a substitute for direct negotiations between the sides," the statement said.
Social Democrat leader Loefven -- who won last month's general election -- said on Friday his country wanted to bolster a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
"A two-state solution requires mutual recognition and the will to co-exist peacefully," Loefven said in his inaugural address to parliament.
This should take place with respect for the "legitimate demands of the Palestinians and the Israelis as regards their right to self-determination and security", he added.
Sweden voted in favour of Palestinian observer status at the United Nations in 2012, which was granted despite opposition from the United States and other countries.
Seven EU members in eastern European and the Mediterranean have already recognised a Palestinian state, namely Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta, Poland and Romania.
Non-EU member Iceland is the only other western European nation to have done so.
Loefven's statement was warmly welcomed by the Palestinians but the United States, Israel's ally, said it was a step too soon.
"We believe international recognition of a Palestinian state is premature," said State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

3. Turkey Suspected of Supporting ISIS

Indeed, despite last week's vote, Turkey has made it clear that there will likely be no military action anytime soon. Meanwhile, rumors run rampant about Turkey's supporting the Islamic State and turning a blind eye both to extremist recruiting cells within its own borders and to the use of smuggling routes to and from Syria.
Within the Turkish government, there is growing concern that the U.S.-led coalition focuses too much on defeating the Islamic State and not at all on toppling longtime Syrian President Bashar Assad. There is also worry over possible attacks on and within Turkey if the country did take up arms against the Islamic State.
In particular, Turkey is concerned about YPG's ties to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which has been in conflict with the Turkish state for 30 years. Designated a terrorist group by Turkey and the United States for its attacks on Turkish soldiers, the PKK has called for basic civil rights, greater freedoms for Kurds and the establishment of an ethnic homeland independent from Turkey (a demand since tabled).
Recently, imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan has warned that a fragile peace process with Turkey would abruptly end if Kobani fell to the Islamic State, threatening the country with internal conflict even as neighboring Syria implodes from its own war.

The Ministry of Defence said in a statement: 'We can confirm that, following parliamentary approval given yesterday, RAF Tornados continue to fly over Iraq and are now ready to be used in an attack role as and when appropriate targets are identified.
'For operational security reasons we will not be providing a running commentary on movements; we will provide an update on activity when it is appropriate to do so.'

In Pakistan, the Taliban has declared allegiance to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
The Taliban ordered its terrorists across the region this weekend to help ISIS build a worldwide caliphate, a global state ruled by Islam.
ISIS has begun to penetrate into southern Asia, particularly in Pakistan and Afghanistan, in addition to the territory it has conquered in northern Iraq and Syria.
The announcement, which also marked the Muslim holy festival of Eid al-Adha, was released by the Taliban in Urdu, Pashto and Arabic. It came immediately after a video posted Friday showing the beheading of UK foreign aid worker Alan Henning.
