The debate continues in Israel about voluntary migration as the only effective solution for the festering humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, and even as a whopping majority of Israelis tell pollsters that they support the move (68% in a December 24 Direct Polls survey supported it strongly, and 15% were quite supportive), the political echelon is far from reflecting the public's mood on the subject.
On December 25, 2023, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed at the Likud Knesset faction meeting that he was working on the voluntary immigration of Gaza residents to other countries. 'Our problem is finding countries that are ready to absorb them, and we are working on it,' Netanyahu said.
The two leaders of the religious right, Ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, have been presenting a definitive program for the day after the war, whenever that day arrives, that includes three inseparable principles: continued IDF control over Gaza; voluntary migration of upwards of 1.5 million out of the 2 million Gaza residents; and the rebuilding of the 17 Gush Katif Jewish settlements in the northern and southern Gaza Strip as the permanent foundation for a peaceful Gaza.
Ben Gvir on Monday went as far as equating the resolution of the threat from Gaza with the 1948 War of Independence:
Even members of Israel's left, such as MK Ram Ben Barak (Yesh Atid) are promoting voluntary emigration from Gaza.
Despite Netanyahu's recent support for voluntary migration, the official Israeli government's line on the subject rejects the idea. After Israel's Intelligence Minister Gila Gamliel's November 19, 2023, op-ed pointed out that close to 350,000 youths from Gaza have migrated following the Hamas takeover in 2007....

Population transfer has at times gained international favor as a humane solution. After the Greco-Turkish War of 1919 -1922, an involuntary population exchange took place between Greece and Turkey involving some 2 million people.
Norwegian explorer turned diplomat Fridtjof Nansen won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 in part for his efforts to negotiate that exchange.

Arabs vandalized an archaeological site in Israel's biblical heartland that millions of Jews and Christians revere as the location where Joshua built an altar, an Israeli NGO said on Thursday.
The reports of renewed damage to the site on Mount Ebal known as Joshua's Altar, which is under joint control with the Palestinian Authority, highlight anew the need for the preservation, upkeep and safeguarding of Israeli archaeological sites in P.A.-controlled areas after decades of neglect.

Support for voluntary migration of Gazan Arabs is coming from an unexpected source: according to an RT January 12 report, Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of the Chechen Republic, announced last Wednesday that his country had begun construction of apartments for Arabs fleeing Gaza.
Kadyrov revealed the news during a groundbreaking event in a designated zone for the development of five blocks, each containing 35 apartments. The structures are close to a school and a nursery.
Chechnya, a.k.a. the Chechen Republic, is a region in Russia, located in the North Caucasus, close to the Caspian Sea. The Chechen Republic is part of the North Caucasian Federal District, and shares land borders with the independent country of Georgia to its south; with the Russian republics of Dagestan, Ingushetia, and North Ossetia-Alania to its east, north, and west; and with Stavropol Krai to its northwest.
Sunni Islam is the predominant religion in Chechnya, practiced by 95% of the residents. Suni Islam is also the predominant religion in Gaza.
