The State of Indiana pertains to Ephraim within Manasseh within the USA. The Official Seal of Indiana depicts a buffallo (bull) and a man sawing a tree down. These are indications of Joseph. Indiana has aspects of Ephraim. Many of the inhabitants of Indiana are of German descent. Presidential contender Wendell Willkie in the 1930s was from Indiana and had German ancestry. Nevertheless he was against the Nazis and in favor of Britain. So too, Indiana today along with Tennessee has taken the lead in outlawing the anti-Jewish hateful BDS (Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions) against the State of Israel movement. This movement seeks to unjustly victimize Israel and Indiana is leading the fight against it!

Simple. A good portion of the Pharisees and Rabbis were Levites! There was no change in spiritual leadership! The Levites and Cohens were both from the Tribe of Levi. They were dedicated to the service of the Almighty. Various tithes and offerings had to be made to them. In return they served in the Temple, sang in its choir, played in its orchestra, handled the animal and vegetable sacrifices, policed the precincts.
The Levites in general were not to serve in the armies of Israel when they went out to war. They were exempt. There were however exemptions from the exemption. An example is Benaiyahu the son of Yehoiada the Priest. He was a great warrior of renown, chief officer of the Cherethi and Pleti mercenaries and at times in the service of David and Solomon in charge of the whole Israelite Army.
The Levites also acted as instructors of the peoples and as policemen and judges.
When the Temple was destroyed many of their tasks were no longer pertinent. Needless they remained. They became a good portion of the Pharisees and Rabbis.
They still are.
In future days it has been premised that the Tribe of Levi along with descendants of David shall be multiplied greatly (Jeremiah 33:22).
The preeminence of the Levites had been predicted in advance. The ruling body of the Israelite Nations in day to day matters was the Sanhedrin of 70 elders. It was considered important that Cohens be included in its quorum. We were commanded that if at ANY TIME a question concerning the Law and how the commandments were to be kept should arise then an appointed juridical body should decide the matter.
Deuteronomy 17:9 " .. you shall consult with the Levitical Priests and the judge who is in office in those days; they shall announce to you the decision in the case."
Actually the Hebrew may more correctly be read to say:
Deuteronomy 17: 9 And you shall come to the priests [Cohens], [and] the Levites, and to the judge there in those days, and inquire of them; they shall pronounce upon you the sentence of judgment.
Here we have the Priest (Cohen), Levite, and the judge (i.e. the Sage) listed together. The Cohens, Levites and the Judges (i.e. Sages) were in effect to be the authoritative body who would decide ALL religious questions. Their decision was to be binding on pain of death:
Deuteronomy 17: 10 You shall do according to the terms of the verdict which they declare to you from that place which the LORD chooses; and you shall be careful to observe according to all that they teach you. 11 According to the terms of the law which they teach you, and according to the verdict which they tell you, you shall do; you shall not turn aside from the word which they declare to you, to the right or the left. 12 The man who acts presumptuously by not listening to the priest who stands there to serve the LORD your God, nor to the judge, that man shall die; thus you shall purge the evil from Israel. 13 Then all the people will hear and be afraid, and will not act presumptuously again.
For the judgment to be acceptable there did NOT have to be a Cohen present, nor a Levite. An ordinary Israelite would do. Nevertheless by the nature of things a ratio of two from the Tribe of Levi (a Cohen and a Levite) to one of Israel is supposed.
And that is still often the reality today! Throughout the centuries a high proportion of the Decisive Rabbinical Authorities have belonged to the Tribes of Levi! No-one says it has to be this way. Levis do not necessarily learn any better than others. Nevertheless when you get to the higher levels and see who makes the judgments that are universally accepted and who does not you find a disproportionate number of Levis in their ranks.

A Midrash (Breishit Rabbah, 'VaYechi,') says that albino blond and red-haired types ("Bohakanim") were common amongst the Tribes of Simeon and Levi.

Examining the Characteristics of each Tribe may bring us closer to knowing which Tribe we belong to.
We begin by analyzing the Hebrew Name of each Tribe.
This often proves to be the key as to what the Character of the Tribe was.

The tribes to a large extent went up to Scandinavia
from the Black Sea area. This is also what the Icelandic anals
indicate.
I trust that Mikkel Kragh has it basically right concerning this, when
he writes the followin:
"The Icelandic chief and historian Snorre Sturlasson (1179-1241)
wrote Heimskringla (app. 1230), of which the first part is called
the Ynglinge Saga, wherein Sturlasson describes the homeland of the
Nordic and Germanic tribes as the areas south and north of the
Caucasus mountains. They were divided into two groups, Aser and Vaner,
which obviously are the names of Asher and Dan, two of the Israelite
tribes in the camp of Dan.
Snorre Sturlasson describes the homeland of the Vaner, which was the
lost Israelite tribe of Dan:
"On the south side of the mountains which lie outside of all inhabited
lands runs a river through Swithiod, which is properly called by the
name of Tanais, but was formerly called Tanaquisl, or Vanaquisl, and
which falls into the Black Sea. The country of the people on the
Vanaquisl was called Vanaland, or Vanaheim; and the river separates
the three parts of the world, of which the eastermost part is called
Asia, and the westermost Europe." (Snorre Sturlasson: Ynglinge
Saga pt. 1)
The river Tanakvisl/Vanakvisl/Tanais must be the river Don, because
its ancient Greek name was Tanais. In the Old Testament, the Danites
named places after their ancestor Dan (Judges 18:12, 29), and Don also
carries the name Dan.
The Vaner lived adjacent to the Aser, whose chief was Odin:
"The country east of the Tanaquisl in Asia was called Asaland, or Asaheim, and the chief city in that land was called Asgaard. In that city was a chief called Odin, and it was a great place for sacrifice. It was the custom there that twelve temple priests
should both direct the sacrifices, and also judge the people. They were called Diar, or Drotner, and all the people served and obeyed them. Odin was a great and very far-travelled warrior, who conquered many kingdoms, and so successful was he that in every battle the victory was on his side." (Snorre Sturlasson: Ynglinge Saga pt. 2)
The lost tribes of Israel's trek from the Middle East to Northern Europe
After a war between the Aser and Vaner, which ended without anyone of them prevailing, Odin led the tribes to Northern Europe:
"There goes a great mountain barrier from north-east to south-west, which divides the Greater Swithiod from other kingdoms. South of this mountain ridge it is not far to Turkland, where Odin had great
possessions. In those times the Roman chiefs went wide around in the world, subduing to themselves all people; and on this account many chiefs fled from their domains. But Odin having foreknowledge, and
magic-sight, knew that his posterity would come to settle and dwell in the northern half of the world. He therefore set his brothers Ve and Vilje over Asgaard; and he himself, with all the gods and a great many other people, wandered out, first westward to Gardarike [Russia], and then south to Saxland [Saxony]. He had many sons; and after having subdued an extensive kingdom in Saxland, he set his sons to rule the country. He himself went northwards to the [Baltic] sea, and took up his abode in an island which is called Odin's Island [Odense] on
Funen." (Snorre Sturlasson: Ynglinge Saga pt. 5)
The account of this trek is confirmed by important historians such as Peter Friderich Suhm (Denmark, 1728-1798) and Olof Rudbeck the Elder (Sweden, 1630-1702). Suhm and Rudbeck did not trace our origins all the way back to the Israelites, but Suhm did write - speaking of the Nordic peoples - that "the ancestors of us, the Germans, and the Celts lived together in Asia Minor" (P.F. Suhm: Om Odin og den Hedniske Gudelre og Gudstieneste udi Norden (1771), p. 140-141)
The Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl also confirmed Snorre
Sturlasson's account in 2002, when he published Jakten pa Odin (The Search for Odin), wherein Heyerdahl specifically wrote that the ancestors of the Norsemen came from Azerbaijan."
