It depends what you consider "contribute". There are different ways of giving. Making a contribution can take variant forms.
Let us look at some of them.
First of all you referred to "Orthodox" in general. Orthodox Jews in Israel comprise Modern Orthodox (in Israel meaning mainly National Religious) and Ultra-Orthodox i.e. Hareidi. You probably intended Hareidi so our answer will concentrate on them. Before then it needs to be noted that the National Religious more than carry their own weight in Defence, in Science, in Industry, Culture, and in every other aspect of regular existence.
The Harereidim in their own way also contribute possibly more than anyone else?
The very existence of the Jewish people is thanks to the Torah and to Jews who adhere to it. Without the Religious Jews the State of Israel would not exist. The Jews would not believe in themselves. Jews who do not believe in the Torah stop believing in the right of Jews to be here. They begin to identify with the enemies of the Jews and to act like them. Thanks to the Hareidim more Jews believe in the Torah and respect it. The national will to exist as Jews emanates from Hareidim more than anyone.
The Secular Media promotes stereotypes of Hareidim as people who do not work but live off Government stipends. Statistically more women work among the Hareidim than those of the Secular. Among the males the gulf between those who work and do not work is in favor of the Secular. In 2018 only 51% of Hareidi males officially worked compared to 87% of other Jewish Israeli men. The largest employer of men in Israel is the Governmental service from which Hareidim are effectually barred. So too, only 17% of the Haredim travelled abroad, in comparison with 52% of other Jewish Israelis. The expenditure in going abroad overall was lost to the Israeli economy. A large proportion of the Hareidi males learn Torah full time. They receive a Government stipend for this and other forms of assistance. Typically this will help cover about 20% of their basic needs. The rest of what they need will come from work of the wives, part-time employment of the men, extended family, and benefactors. The Government through indirect taxation and all kinds of levies, real-estate taxation, etc. will receive about 50 per cent, or more, of what they expend. Deduct 20 from 50 and you get a profit margin in favor of the rulership of 30%. Most of Government expenditure goes to the non-Hareidi sector. A secular child receives 5 times (sic) more in Government help than a Hareidi offspring!
No man is an island. Hareidi live longer, healthier, have much less crime, less mental disturbance, more stable families, use cheaper more ecologically friendly means of transport, and are less of a burden to maintain than their secular peers. They give more to charity and are more active in altruistic projects.
On top of all this they are sometimes depicted in a negative way whereas the truth points in the opposite direction.
Hareidim in general do not serve in the IDF. They are discriminated against quite severely because of it.
The Torah that they learn however helps a great deal.
We need both the IDF and we need Jews to learn Torah.
Nothing is perfect. The IDF on its part seems to often promote Social Engineering on a Secular Model at the cost of military efficiency, and even Jewish lives.
