The Book of Esther tells us how the Jews in the Persian Emp[ire were saved from extermination due to the intervention of Mordecai and his niece Esther.
They were fromt he Tribe of Benjamin though Mordecai is also referred to as a "Jew".
Esther 2:
5 Now there was at the citadel in Susa a Jew whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite, 6 who had been taken into exile from Jerusalem with the captives who had been exiled with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had exiled. 7 He was bringing up Hadassah, that is Esther, his uncle's daughter, for she had no father or mother. Now the young lady was beautiful of form and face, and when her father and her mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter.
The Jews of Judah derive from a central core of inhabitants of the Kingdom of Judah.
These derived mainly from the Tribes of Judah and Benjamin though representatives of all the other tribes were also present with them.
Most of Benjamin were not exiled with the Ten Tribes but stayed with Judah.
The bible emphasizes the presence of the Tribes of Judah and Benjamin within the Kingdom of Judah.
Nevertheless, numerically a large number from both Judah and Benjamin appear to have gone with the Ten Tribes and to be found among them.
We have identified the Belgae of Celtic culture as at least in part as being of Benjaminite descent. Groups of Belgae were present in Belgium , south east England, and eastern Ireland.
The Festival of Purim Celebrating the delivery from extermination occasioned by Mordecia and Esther. On this day the Book of Esther is read publicly both on the evening of the Festival and then during the day. A Festive meal is eaten, donations to the poor are given, and presents of food and drink exchanged between neighbors and friends.
This year the feast of Purim is celebrated on March 24, 2016 in most places. In Jerusalem it is celebrated on March 25, 2016.
Prior to the feast, on March 23, it is a fast day in remembrance of the days of fasting Esther requested the Jews of Shushan to hold when they prayed for deliverance.
[It is a a short fast day, beginning at sunrise and finishing at sunset. Neither food nor water is consumed.]
Esther 4:
15 Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai, 16 Go, assemble all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; do not eat or drink forthree days, night or day. I and my maidens also will fast in the same way. And thus I will go in to the king, which is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish. 17 So Mordecai went away and did just as Esther had commanded him.
