We analyzed the Blessings of Moses to the Individual Tribes in Deuteronomy .

We are now going back to these blessings and looking at them again. This time however we will be using more the perspective of Traditional Rabbinical Commentators who often concentrated on the niceties of the Hebrew Language.

Deuteronomy 33:
4 Moses charged us with the law,
  as a possession for the assembly of Jacob.
5 There arose a king in Jeshurun,
  when the leaders of the people assembled
  the united tribes of Israel.
6 May Reuben live, and not die out,
  even though his numbers are few.
Adjusted Translation and Explanation:
Deuteronomy 33:
6. May Reuben live [in this world], and not die out [in the next world, -Onkelos, Rashi]
yehi [and let] Mativ [his men] mispar [number]
And may his men be numbered [Rashi] in their inheritance [Onkelos]
The Natziv says that this word "matayav" translated as "his men" actually means "his noted and distinguished ones".
Reuben was the firstborn and at the beginning was to be the first to go out to war. Moses prayed that not only would he not suffer loss of population through war but on the contrary, he would receive an increase. Every single one of his outstanding personages was to be of value and numbered in their own right.
Vali (Ramado) (perhaps interpreting the the Zohar in VaYechi)Â notes that in the End Times Reuben will attempt to gain command over all Israel. He will not however succeed since the rulership will go to Judah.
