There is also the Dialectic Principle present in Jewish thought. It is an ability to reconcile opposites or, alternately, to live with two parallel contradictions without necessarily reconciling them. Greek and later German philosophers (e.g. Hegel) made some attempt to imitate this quality but appear to have been only partially successful. At all events this may be considered an aspect of Jewish National Character. It exists. It may have negative or positive expressions, like any other trait. It may be considered an aspect of God Himself as HE reveals Himself to us through History.

Just to add my two cents to this discussion, does it really seem likely that
a people would name themselves after a weapon they carry? Any reasonably
large tribal nation will employ various weapons and they will change over
time. It would be as though the English, upon reaching New England began
calling themselves the "Flintlocks" because that was one of the weapons they
carried at the time. Wherever and whenever the Saxons originated they
undoubtedly didn't suddenly begin to refer to themselves by their noun for
dagger. As Brit-Am has documented, the name Saxon can be traced into
ancient history. The name probably predates the weapon.
And if the name was conferred upon them by their enemies, such as Romans,
that doesn't make sense either. It would imply that the Romans were already
familiar with the weapon and so began calling their opponent that because
they carried that weapon. But if they were familiar with the weapon, then
they had seen it before: It wasn't unique to this particular tribe, so why
name them after it? Again, it would be as though English settlers in New
England called local Indian tribes "clubs" because they carried clubs. Of
course that didn't happen.
It seems far more likely that the Romans were informed that the name of the
tribe was something like Saxe, Sasche, etc. and they spelled that out as
best they could in Latin and associated their uniquely designed weapon with
them.
The early European Saxons didn't have literature. Whatever the Romans
called them and the weapon in their own Latin writings is what the they
would be known as to later scholars. That was the only written record to go
by.
