The Prophet Hosea was told to take an immoral whore named Gomer as his wife. They had three children. The relationship of Hosea and his spouse was to represent that between the Almighty and the Israelites. Their children served as similes for the Lost Ten Tribes in exile. The name Gomer was the same name as that given to the Cimmerians with whom the Lost Ten Tribes were to be identified. Jezreel the son of Gomer and Hosea has a name meaning both scattered and ingathered. This represented the future of the Ten Tribes. The name Jezreel is in principle the same as the name Zer which the Assyrians applied to the Cimmerians.

Despite their generally negative depiction in the Bible, Lord Mayors of the City of London carry images of Gog and Magog (depicted as giants) in a traditional procession in the Lord Mayor's Show. According to the tradition, the giants Gog and Magog are guardians of the City of London, and images of them have been carried in the Lord Mayor's Show since the days of King Henry V. The Lord Mayor's procession takes place each year on the second Saturday of November.

Towards the head of the procession you will see two stern but benevolent wicker giants. They are Gog and Magog, the traditional guardians of the City of London, and they have been carried in the Lord Mayor's Show since the reign of Henry V.
The statues of Gog and Magog currently standing in the Guildhall were commissioned from sculptor David Evans after the previous versions were destroyed in the Blitz. The phoenix shield tells us that this is Magog.
The previous statues stood for over two hundred years. They were carved by Captain Richard Saunders in 1708 to replace the wicker-and-plaster figures that used to take part in the Lord Mayor's procession but had succumbed first to fire and then to rats and mice.
In 2006 the wicker figures of Gog and Magog finally returned to the Lord Mayor's Procession, thanks to months of hard work by the Company of Basketmakers.
The matter of Britain
Gog and Magog, or sometimes Gogmagog and Corineus, are descended from mythical pagan giants and their origins lie in mediaeval legends of the early British Kings. The story goes that Diocletian, Â the Roman Emperor, had thirty-three wicked daughters. He managed to find thirty-three husbands to curb their unruly ways, but the daughters were not pleased and under the leadership of their eldest sister Alba they plotted to cut the throats of their husbands as they slept.Â
