1. Jews and Others in Britain. (Fish and Chips?) British Refugee Poll by Algemeiner Staff

The contributions of Jewish refugees were prominently featured in the results of a Britain Thinks poll that were released to coincide with the launch of Refugee Week 2013 according to London's Evening Standard newspaper. The nationwide festival celebrates the positive influence that refugees have had on British society.
The Austrian-Jewish founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud topped the national poll with 50% of the vote as the refugee who has made the most significant contribution to British life.
In second place was Max Born who garnered 21% of the vote. The German who was of Jewish descent is famous for his work in the field of physics and mathematics, and was instrumental in the development of quantum mechanics. He won the 1954 Nobel Prize in Physics.
The poll also asked respondents for their opinion on the 20th century inventions that had made the greatest contribution to British life. Notably, the popular British dish fish and chips which was introduced to the United Kingdom by French Protestant refugees and Jewish settlers from Portugal, received 17% of the vote.
In second place came high street department store Marks and Spencer, co-founded by Russian-Jewish refugee Michael Marks, with 11% of the vote.
'An overwhelming majority (94%) believed that the full history of Britain, including the role the country has played in protecting refugees, should be taught in schools,' the Standard reported.
Commenting on the contributions of refugees who fled to Britain, Chairman of Refugee Week Maurice Wren said: 'From as early as the arrival of the Armenians who settled in this country during the 12th century, the UK has enjoyed a proud tradition of welcome for those seeking sanctuary. The results of the survey show the valuable contribution that refugees have made to British history and heritage. It is interesting to see that the great British public consistently rank science and technology inventions more highly than the equally positive contributions to British cultural and sporting life made more recently by refugees.'

Shalom Yair
Yes, that's right. Everybody's favourite island based constitutional
monarchy is your second biggest trading partner. No, not yours (you
wish), Israel's.
In fact, bilateral trade between the UK and Israel increased by 22%
between the first quarter of 2012. And all this in spite of the boycott
movement. Imports were especially healthy with a 57% rise in the same
period

Record surge in Israel-UK trade

By Sandy Rashty, June 13, 2013
Sir Mervyn King, the retiring Bank of England Governor, praised Israel's economic performance
Trade between Britain and Israel rose by 21.9 per cent year-on-year between the first quarter of 2012 and 2013.
And despite the vociferous boycott campaign, imports from Israel rose by 55.6 per cent in the same period.
The figures released by the Central Bureau of Statistics in Israel show a  170 [pound sterling] million overall increase in bilateral trade.
Most of the British imports come from Israel's renowned high-tech sector. But food produce is also a key contributor to the buoyant trade figures, despite being one of the boycott campaign's main areas of attack.
Expect to see trade between the UK and Israel continue to increase
The UK is Israel's second largest export market. The US is the largest.
Noah Shani, minister for Trade and Economic Affairs at the Israeli Embassy in London, said: 'Business between Israel and the UK is booming and the latest bilateral trade figures are once again testament to the strength and vibrancy of this trade relationship.'
Hugo Bieber, chief executive of UK Israel Business, a leading organisation promoting trade relations between the two countries, added: 'We have seen significant interest from Israeli firms exporting to the UK and also from UK firms looking to purchase best-in-class products and services from Israel.'
'Given Israel's status as the 'start-up nation', consistently developing new technologies across sectors, we expect to see trade between the UK and Israel continue to increase.
'When business is put ahead of politics, significant economic benefits can be seen for both the UK and Israel.'
Since the beginning of the year, the UK Israel Tech Hub at the British embassy has helped organise five tech-related business delegations between the two nations.
This week, Middle East Minister Alistair Burt joined a delegation of 20 British pharmaceutical and biomedical companies to Tel Aviv - including NHS representatives .
The two-day trip is part of a number of government-backed delegations promoting co-operative economic relations between the two counties.
Rohan Silva, a senior policy adviser to David Cameron, led a delegation of British supermarket chains and luxury brands to Israel last month.
Meanwhile, at the UK Israel Business Awards on Wednesday, Sir Mervyn King, the retiring Bank of England Governor, praised Israel's economic performance. 'It is one of the very few advanced economies whose output grew every year throughout the economic crisis', he said. He also revealed that he had advised Israel's central bank on a new law regulating the functions of the Bank of Israel.

Who's a Jew? An old religious argument once again rears its angry head
Extract:
WHEN is a Jew not a Jew? When he's a Karaite. Or so says Israel's chief rabbinate, which, after 65 years of relative harmony with an ancient Jewish sect, is reopening an old and bitter schism. In recent months, rabbis working for Israel's ministry of religion have deemed Karaite marriages invalid, fined their butchers for claiming to be kosher, and demanded that Karaites marrying Orthodox Jewish women should convert, sometimes having to undergo tavila, or baptism [ritual immersion]. 'We are already Jews,' protests Moshe Firrouz, a computer engineer who heads the Karaites' Council of Sages. 'The rabbinate is denying us our religious freedom.'
