It would seem that the question is confusing "Zionism" with the Modern Political Movement of that same name. The Bible speaks of the Holy Land being promised to the Israelite Nation.
The Israelites were given the Land as an irrevocable gift but they were expected to keep the Torah and drive out the pagans. If they did not do that then they might be expelled BUT the Land remained theirs when they came back. The Jews in principle had a religious obligation to dwell in the Land and not leave it and not surrender control of it to others. These were all commandments and part of the Jewish Religion from the very beginning.
This in effect is Zionism.
Jews had always tried to live in the Land. Jews outside of the Land did what they could to help those living in it. This was part of the Jewish Religion.

An early attempt along modern lines was made in 1558 by Dona Gracia Mendes Nasi who had born in Lisbon, Portugal, and was of Anusim (Marrano) Jewish descent though nominally born Christian.
She and her family moved to Antwerp in Belgium and grew rich through the spice trade.

Eventually they became openly Jewish and transferred themselves to Constantinople. The Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Suleiman the Magnificent, granted Don Gracia a long-term lease on the Tiberias region in Galilee which was then considered part of Syria. The Sultan also helped Dona Gracia populate the region with Jewish refugees. After Don Gracia died the project began to peter out but something of it remained.

From the 1700s onwards an increasing number of different groups (some religious and some secular) among the Jews began to organize increased settlement. They spoke of applying political pressures and modern lobbying methods for this purpose.
This is what could be called Modern Zionism.
At about this same time many non-Jewish individuals in the west also spoke of the need to help the Jews return to the Land. Books and articles were written on the subject and political activities initiated.
Most of those involved in this matter were subjects of Britain but prominent individuals also spoke along the same lines in Italy, Spain, Netherlands, France, Germany, USA, etc.
In Britain the movement was known as Restorationism. It did not really precede Modern Zionism but rather evolved parallel to it. Some of the Early Restorationists had missionary goals in mind. They spoke of converting the Jews to Christianity. This however was more wishful thinking than anything else. It was not usually emphasized, and it was NOT indispensable.
The term "Christian Zionism" is misleading since the Gentiles concerned though they believed in the Bible they did not necessarily all believe in Christianity.
However one names it, the phenomenon did not really precede Jewish Zionism but rather emerged parallel to it and relied upon it.
